Box Score The American University lacrosse team dropped its first road game of the season at Virginia Tech on Wednesday, 14-11.
American (3-2) went up 1-0 early off a goal from Emily Burton but Jessica Nonn answered for the Hokies to tie it at 1-1. Lauren Schoenberger tallied a goal on a free position shot with 21:04 remaining before Nonn added two more goals for Virginia Tech to cut American's lead to 4-3.
Back-to-back goals from Burton and Bernadette Maher put American up 6-3 but the Hokies went on a 3-0 run to tie the game. Schoenberger scored with 3:52 left in the half to give the Eagles a 7-6 lead but Virginia Tech's Meg Bartley found the back of the net with two seconds remaining to tie it at 7-7 heading into the break.
Virginia Tech (4-2) got on the board first in the second half before back-to-back goals from Kimberly Collins and Burton gave American a 9-8 lead. The Hokies went on a 4-0 run over the next eight minutes to take a 12-9 lead with 11:48 remaining.
Goals from Schoenberger and B. Maher cut the lead to 12-11 but Virginia Tech closed out the game with back-to-back goals for the 14-11 final score.
Burton and Schoenberger led the Eagles with four goals apiece while B. Maher added two and Collins tallied one. American held a 14-12 advantage in draw controls with Virginia Tech owning a 12-11 advantage in ground balls collected. Nonn led the Hokies with five goals in the game.
The Eagles open Patriot League play on Saturday, March 10 when they travel to Holy Cross at 4 p.m.
