Box Score The American University volleyball team battled back and forth with top-seeded Colgate in a match featuring 21 ties and nine lead changes before the Raiders were able to hold off the Eagles to claim the Patriot League Championship, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.
Juliana Crum and Kelly McCaddin were recognized on the All-Tournament Team after Crum led the Eagles with the double-double, notching a team-high 21 kills and hitting .235 with 13 digs. McCaddin tallied 14 kills, hitting .286 in the match. Kylann Scheidt directed the offense with 58 assists, also adding nine digs and seven blocks. Allison Cappellino led the defensive effort with 17 digs with Kristyna Lindovska recording a team-best eight blocks. The Eagles outhit Colgate, .186 to .165, in the match and posted 15 total blocks.
American (21-10) opened the match with four consecutive points for an early 5-1 lead before the Raiders were able to chip away to make it a three-point match, 10-7. After three straight points by the Eagles, Colgate responded with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 16-13 and forced American to call a timeout. The Eagles were able to end the set and take the 1-0 match lead, closing out the set on a 7-1 run for the 25-16 victory.
Colgate (17-13) took the early advantage before American was able to tie it at six on a kill from McCaddin. The Raiders responded with a 7-1 run to take a 13-7 lead, capping off the run with a block from Kaylee Fifer and Diane Seely. Colgate continued its momentum, taking an 18-9 lead on a block from Liz Karnes and held off American's comeback attempt for a 25-19 win in the second set to tie the match.
The third set featured seven ties with four lead changes before the Eagles were able to use four consecutive tallies for a 21-19 lead. Colgate took a timeout and added a point after the break but American closed it out with a 4-1 run for the 25-21 victory to take the one-match advantage.
American took a 6-1 lead to open the fourth set before Colgate used five straight points to cut the lead to one, 10-9, on a kill by Seely. The two teams went back and forth with the Eagles holding the slight advantage before the Raiders were finally able to tie it at 15. American responded with three straight points but Colgate used a 5-0 run to take a 21-19 lead. The Eagles made it a one-point match on a kill from McCaddin, 22-21. The Raiders tied the match at two sets apiece on three consecutive scores for the 25-21 win.
The Eagles held a 4-0 advantage in the fifth set before five straight points gave Colgate an 8-5 lead. American tied it at 10 but a 4-0 run put the Raiders up 14-10. The Eagles prevented Colgate from closing it out, using four straight points of their own to tie it at 14. The teams traded points before the Raiders were able to string together consecutive tallies for the 20-18 victory to take home the Patriot League title.
Lindsay Young posted a double-double for Colgate on 15 kills and 12 digs with Seely leading the attack with 18 kills, hitting .375. Fifer also had a double-double for the Raiders on 49 assists and 12 digs while Karnes contributed seven blocks.
