Box Score
The American University women's soccer team played to a 2-2
double overtime draw with Colgate in the regular season finale
Saturday afternoon at Reeves Field. The Eagles close the conference
campaign with a 4-2-1 record and qualified for the Patriot League
Tournament for the first time since 2009.
"This was important today," said Head Coach Dave Bucciero. "I thought today we put
together two quality halves and we moved the ball very well for 110
minutes and I thought we played very well and limited Colgate's
chances for 110 minutes. It was great to see us play that way and
coming back from down two goals was great and shows that we can
come back and tie and win games that way."
Colgate (10-5-3, 5-1-1 PL) tallied the match's first two goals,
one in the 19th minute when Kelsey Hough converted a long-range
shot off a pass from Carolina Brawner. The match remained 1-0
through halftime and the Raiders took a 2-0 advantage in the 54th
minute on Jillian Kinter's 13th strike of the season. It came off a
cross from Catherine Williams.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, American (6-9-2, 4-2-0 PL) cut Colgate's
lead in half when Carleigh
Morba knocked home her first goal of the season.
Michelle
Montilio fed a long pass down the field to Morba, who
slid a shot from 10 yards out to the far post.
The Eagles tied the match in the 83rd minute on Lindsay
Muri's first goal of the campaign. Sam
Trotta set up the play with a shot off the goal post,
which deflected to a hustling Muri right in front of the goal. Muri
converted the open score and knotted the match at two.
In the two overtime sessions, Colgate outshot American by a 5-1
total, but neither side was able to find the back of the net. The
best opportunity for either side was by Colgate's Emily Manoogian,
who missed a short shot just high of the crossbar.
For the match, American held a slight 16-13 advantage in shots,
including a 5-4 mark in shots on goal. Colgate earned 10 corner
kicks compared to six for the Eagles. Individually, Morba recorded
a game-high six shots for American.
"I think we're definitely coming full circle from our freshman
year being seniors now," said Morba. "We played Colgate in the
finals of the Patriot League tournament last time and we know we're
facing them again so hopefully we can pull out a win this
time."
American will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Patriot League
Tournament, which will be played next weekend at Navy. Colgate will
be the No. 2 seed and these same two squads will face one another
again in a semifinal on Friday.
