Box Score Five players hit .300 or better with Sara Rishell tallying a team-high 16 kills as the American University volleyball team registered a 3-1 victory at Navy on Friday night.
Rishell hit .344 in the match to lead the Eagles as they outhit Navy, .290 to .142. Morgan Hendrix hit a team-best .533, notching nine kills with one error, and also posted a team-high 10 blocks. Kristyna Lindovska led American with three service aces, also hitting .500 in the match with eight kills, while Kelly McCaddin hit .304 with nine kills. Kylann Scheidt paced the offense with 39 assists, hitting .300 with five kills in the match, while Allison Cappellino led the defense with 12 digs.
American (16-9, 7-3) took an 11-6 lead in the first set on a block by Hendrix and Lindovska before the Midshipmen fought back to tie it at 14 with a kill by Erin Fortner. The match was tied again at 17 and the Eagles used a 5-1 run to take a 21-18 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Lindovska and Hendrix gave American the 25-20 set victory to open the match.
Navy (9-13, 5-5) hung with the Eagles to open the second set before a 4-1 run put American up 14-6. The Eagles took a 10-point advantage on back-to-back aces from Megan Rosburg as the team was able to roll to a 25-10 victory and 2-0 lead.
The Midshipmen took a 5-1 lead early in the third set before American was able to cut it to a one-point match on a block by Hendrix. The Eagles tied it with a block from Scheidt and took a 13-11 lead on a Navy error. The Midshipmen regained the lead after five more ties and were able to close out the set with four consecutive points for the 25-21 win.
The fourth set featured 12 ties with four lead changes before American was able to take the lead and hold off the Midshipmen attack down the stretch, outhitting Navy .250 to .132 in the final set as it picked up the 25-21 victory.
Carolyn Ewert led the Midshipmen with the double-double, tallying 10 kills with 11 digs, while Fortner posted a team-high 16 kills. Christy Rapp led the defensive effort for Navy with 14 digs.
American continues conference play next weekend when it takes on Lehigh on Friday, November 2 at 7 p.m. and Lafayette on Saturday, November 3 at 2 p.m. The Eagles return to Bender Arena to close out the regular season when it hosts Colgate on Friday, November 9 at 7 p.m. and Bucknell on Saturday, November 10 at 4 p.m.
