The American University field hockey team rolled to a 6-2
victory over Towson to close out the weekend as five different
players found the back of the net.
"It was great to get two wins, that's the most important part,
but happy also to have a shutout yesterday in league play and
really take it up a notch defensively," said Head Coach Steve Jennings. "Today we had a nice set-up
with a lot of finishing and a strong performance all around. I'm
very happy with the wins."
Towson (1-14, 0-4 CAA) got on the board first just a minute and
a half into the game. The Tigers took possession at the start and
immediately charged down the field where Stevie Winchester's shot
was blocked by the Eagles defense and rolled out of bounds to earn
the penalty corner. Towson took advantage and Ashlea Carl put the
ball in the back of the net after it was deflected by an American
defender.
American (7-8, 2-1 PL) responded in the eighth minute when
Kati
Rothenhoefer was able to tie the match at one on a
breakaway, with Keelin
Winslow registering the assist. The Eagles continued
to challenge the Towson defense and took the lead in the 13th
minute. Shelly
Montgomery had a shot just inside the circle that
bounced off the pads of Tashani Dickson, but Canon
Hirschler was there for the put back for the 2-1
advantage.
Montgomery added her first of the day in the 19th minute.
Rebecca
Treharne passed it to Alex
McMackin from the top of the circle. McMackin tapped
it to Montgomery who was waiting at the right post and was able to
slip it past Dickson. Jaclyn
Anspach gave the Eagles a three goal lead just two and
a half minutes later on a breakaway with Julie
Fosseprez tallying the assist.
Towson responded two minutes later to cut American's lead back
to two. Kelly Mattingly sent it into the circle from 24 yards out.
Kasie Nurko picked it up on the right side of the cage and crossed
it to Caitie Barnwell for the finish.
American came out of the half with four consecutive penalty
corners and notched its fifth goal of the game on the final attempt
when McMackin was able to convert the shot for the 5-2 Eagles'
lead. Gina
Hofmann and Fosseprez recorded the assists on the
tally.
The Tigers tried to cut the deficit in the 49th minute but
Stephanie
Burry was able to register the save on Courtney
Branco's attempt.
Montgomery added the finish for the Eagles, posting her 11th
goal of the year on a hard shot into the left corner of the cage in
the 64th minute for the 6-2 final score.
American held a 26-9 advantage in shots in the game, with a 16-5

penalty corners. Ashley
Dalisera started in goal, tallying one save, while
Burry made two saves in 25 minutes between the pipes.
