The American University men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2011 seasons on Friday by sweeping the Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals.
The men's team took the top three spots in its race with Mark Allen, Mark Leininger and John Pope finishing 1-2-3. Allen crossed the line in 15:25.60 with Leininger clocking in at 15:26.00. Pope completed the race in 15:28.66.
The Eagles top six finishers all placed in the top 25. Josh Olsen took 12th place (15:42.95) while C.J. Horvath (15:51.91) and Zach Weinstein (15:55.53) placed 23rd and 25th, respectively.
Octavia Rinehardt cruised to victory in the women's race with a time of 18:02.99, finishing nearly 14 full seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Alexandra Tyburski took sixth with a time of 18:52.12 and Carly Birkhold placed eighth in 19:00.06. Leah Gellineau, meanwhile, finished 10th to give the team four top 10 performers and stopped the clock at 19:17.71.
Also competing for the women's team was Julia Sullivan (35th, 20:19.85) and Rachel Wolff (47th, 21:10.94).
The men's team defeated George Washington, Maryland, Mount St. Mary's, Navy, St. Bonaventure and UMBC while the women's team defeated George Mason, George Washington, Maryland, Mount St. Mary's, St. Bonaventure and UMBC.
American will return to action on Saturday, September 17 at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
