The American University men's basketball team defeated Randolph-Macon 62-61 Wednesday night in an exhibition game in Bender Arena.

Seniors Troy Brewer and Charles Hinkle led all scorers with 18 points apiece, as Hinkle also led the team in rebounds (8) and blocks (2). Junior Daniel Munoz led the team with five assists, and added seven points and two rebounds.

Randolph-Macon opened the scoring, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before Brewer found the net for the Eagles, adding the team's first nine points. Back-to-back Hinkle three's put the team up 15-11 with 13:06 left in the half.

A number of Eagles got involved as junior Blake Jolivette, senior Simon McCormack, freshman John Schoof and sophomore Tony Wroblicky all added points to put the Eagles up 31-22 with four minutes remaining. The team went into the locker room with a 34-27 lead at the end of half. American shot 58.3 percent from the floor in the first and held Randolph-Macon to 39.3 percent. Brewer led all scorers with 13 points.

Randolph-Macon battled back to within four just six minutes into the second half and closed the gap to one, 39-38, with 13:23 on the clock. American added only five points in the first 12 minutes of the game, before Munoz hit a three-point jumper to give the Eagles the four-point advantage, 42-38. The teams continued to go back and forth until Randolph-Macon was able to tie the game at 48 as Adam Desgain hit two free throws with 7:53 left in the half.

Another made free throw by Randolph-Macon's Trent Walker put the Yellow Jackets up 49-48, but a Munoz lay-up followed by a Hinkle jumper restarted the scoring for the Eagles, putting them up 52-49 with 4:36 remaining. Hinkle continued to drive the scoring, adding two before Daniel Fisher added four points for the Eagles to make it 58-54 with 2:29 left in the game. A three-point field goal from Randolph-Macon's Desgain brought them within one, but Hinkle answered right back with a jumper as the Eagles gained momentum off a Munoz block and Jolivette steal with a little over a minute left. A lay-up by Fisher in the final seconds secured the Eagles the win, despite a three from Desgain at the buzzer to make it 62-61.

"You'd love to play a great game and not have it come down the last play, but I think ultimately we might actually get more out of it by playing in this kind of game," Head Coach Jeff Jones said following the game.  "Each opportunity for us that we take the court, whether it's in a game or practice, hopefully we can learn and hopefully we can get a little bit better."

American shot 49.1 percent from the floor and 31.3 percent from three-point range, while limiting the Yellow Jackets to 38.2 percent and 21.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Eagles held the advantage in rebounds (37-27), while Randolph-Macon led in steals (10-1) and blocks (5-3).
