Jones gave the American University women's
soccer team a second-half lead, but the Eagles were unable to hang
on in a 2-1 defeat to George Mason on Monday afternoon at
Georgetown's North Kehoe Field.
After a scoreless first half, Jones registered gave American
(0-6) the 1-0 advantage in the 54th minute of play. Sophomore
Jasmine Mohandesi crossed the ball from
the right side to the far side post, where Jones was able to finish
from short range.
The Eagles played from ahead for the next 20-plus minutes until
George Mason (2-2-1) converted the game-tying goal in the 76th
minute. The Patriots' Kelly Thomas was credited with the
goal, as she beat AU goalkeeper Arianna Efstathiou.
George Mason's Omolyn Davis was able to sneak another score
past Efstathiou in the 82nd minute of play, which turned out to be
the difference in the match, as the Patriots held on for the 2-1
victory.
The match was evenly-played in most of the statistical
categories, as GMU held a narrow 15-14 advantage in shots, although
AU fired seven on goal compared to six for the Patriots. Each team
committed 10 fouls, while George Mason earned seven corner kicks to
three for the Eagles.
American's goal-scorer Jones led the offensive attack with
a game-high four shots, two of which were on goal. Mohandesi was
credited with three shots, while Brooke Sheppard had two shots on frame.
Efstathiou played all 90 minutes in goal for the Eagles,
registering four saves.
American will be back in action on Friday, September 10 at
Richmond. Opening kick is scheduled for 7 p.m.
