Waterman's Double-Double Lifts Volleyball Past Stony Brook, 3-0; Watch Highlights

Box Score

The American University volleyball team earned its fourth consecutive victory and improved to 10-2 on the year Sunday with a 3-0 win over Stony Brook at Bender Arena. Angelina Waterman recorded her second double-double of the season to lead the Eagles, who continue to enjoy their best start to a season since 2001. The victory came by set scores of 25-22, 25-13 and 25-22.

American (10-2) pulled out to a 10-5 lead in the first set behind four Waterman kills but led only 20-17 late in the set. A Stony Brook (4-10) error and Katerina Cinkova service ace gave the Eagles a five-point cushion, 22-17, as Juliana Crum earned set point for American, 25-22.

The Eagles held a 10-4 advantage in the second set as the Seawolves committed six errors to open the frame. A Magdalena Tekiel kills moved the score to 13-7 before a Waterman and Cinkova block capped off a 4-0 spurt to give American a 20-10 margin. A Cassandra Ricketts ace and Virginia Fitch kill put the score at 23-11 and a Waterman ace gave the Eagles set point, 25-13.

Stony Brook challenged the Eagles early in the third set, tying the score at seven following an Ashley Headen kill. The Eagles responded with a 3-0 run, which included two blocks, to open a 10-7 lead immediately following and held a 17-12 advantage after a Seawolve error. Alexandra Hammer increased American's lead to seven points, 20-13, with a service ace and a Tekiel kill gave the Eagles their largest lead of the set, 21-17. Stony Brook began to chip away at its deficit and trailed by only one down the stretch, 24-23. The Eagles would put the match away following a timeout, however, as Waterman scored set point, 25-23.

"We hit the ball really strong tonight. We had all three sets where we were attacking [Stony Brook] and continued to aggressively hit at them and wore them out," Head Coach Barry Goldberg commented. "Right now we are on target and playing the game better.  Towson and Stony Brook are defensive type of teams and we were able to compete with them. They are very similar to the types of teams we play in the Patriot League and I believe these matches will help us to prepare for conference play."

Waterman scored a match-high 15 kills and notched 15 digs to record her second double-double of the year and third of her career. The senior finished the match with a .300 hitting percentage (15 kills, 30 attempts, 6 errors) and added two aces and two total blocks. Tekiel also recorded double-digit kills, converting 13 kills on 21 attempts with only one error for a .571 hitting percentage.

Krysta Cicala and Hammer split time at the setter position, recording 19 assists and 23 assists, respectively. The duo helped to guide American to a .385 hitting percentage for the match with only 10 errors. The Eagles defense, meanwhile, held Stony Brook to a .213 hitting percentage with Waterman and Deborah Frantz (14 digs) leading the charge.

The Eagles' 10-2 record marks the team's best start to a season since 2001. American finished that season with a 26-4 mark en route to the program's first Patriot League Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament
