Box Score The American University volleyball team defeated Army 3-2 Saturday night in West Point, N.Y, to clinch the 2010 Patriot League Regular Season Championship and the top seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
Magdalena Tekiel and Cassandra Ricketts recorded double-doubles to lead American (25-2, 12-0) to the victory. Tekiel notched 21 kills and 14 digs for her eighth double-double of the year while Ricketts turned in a career-high 17 kills and 14 digs for just her second career double-double. Tekiel's 21 kills came on 50 attempts with just four errors for a .340 hitting percentage. Ricketts, meanwhile, finished the evening with a .395 hitting percentage, converting her 17 kills on 38 attempts with only two errors.
Bianca Richardson also turned in a solid performance for the Eagles, scoring 11 kills and adding four digs. Juliana Crum added eight kills and a career-best 15 digs. American combined for a .271 hitting percentage with Krysta Cicala dishing out a career-high 61 assists.
The match was tight the entire way as American and Army (17-12, 10-2) battled through six lead changes and 25 tied scores. The victory came by set scores of 25-23, 18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-13.
With the win, American has clinched the conference's regular season title for the ninth time in 10 years. As regular season champions the Eagles have also earned the right to host the Patriot League Tournament November 20-21 at Bender Arena. American won eight straight tournament championships from 2001-2008 at Bender and is 16-0 all-time at home in the tournament.
American also extended its winning streak to 19 matches, marking the program's longest winning streak since taking 19 straight during the 2006 season.
The Eagles will close out the 2010 regular season next weekend with a pair of matches at Lehigh and Lafayette. American will first take to the court on Friday, November 12, against the Mountain Hawks at 7:00 p.m. and will return to action on Saturday, November 13, against the Leopards at 4:00 p.m. A win in each match would give American a perfect 14-0 record in conference play for the sixth time in 10 years.
