The American University men's basketball team will open the 2010-11 season on Thursday, November 4, with an exhibition game against Randolph-Macon at Bender Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
American enters the season as the favorite to win the conference title, having been picked first in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. The Eagles received seven first-place votes from conference coaches and sports information directors, and a total of 79 points. They were followed in the poll by Lehigh (76 points), Lafayette (73 points), and Holy Cross (70).
Senior forward Vlad Moldoveanu was also recognized by the Patriot League as a Preseason All-League Team selection. Moldoveanu was named to the All-Patriot League First Team last season after averaging 18.1 ppg and 6.5 rpg. This summer he rejoined the Romanian National Team as it competed in qualifying play for the EuroBasket Division B tournament. Moldoveanu averaged 16.8 ppg and 5.0 rpg while leading Romania to a 3-1 record.
American returns all five starters and 12 members of last season's squad which finished 7-7 in conference play and reached the Patriot League Tournament semifinals for the ninth consecutive year. Junior Stephen Lumpkins will look to improve upon a very strong sophomore campaign in which he averaged 13.0 ppg, 8.5 rpg and 1.6 bpg. Also returning are seniors Nick Hendra (10.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg) and Steve Luptak (3.0 ppg, 14 apg), junior Simon McCormack (5.9 ppg, 4.1 rpg) and sophomore Daniel Munoz (4.6 ppg, 1.8 apg).
Randolph-Macon enters the season ranked in three Div. III preseason polls, and was tabbed as high as No. 2 by D3hoops.com. The Yellow Jackets advanced to the Div. III Final Four last season, finishing the year with a 26-7 overall record. Like American, Randolph-Macon returns all five starters from a year ago.
