Box Score The American University women's soccer team fell to Loyola
(Md.), 2-0, on Friday afternoon at Reeves Field.
Loyola (4-4-1) scored both of its goals in the second half in
less than a six minute span. The first goal was converted in the
71st minute by Nichole Schiro off a timely crossing pass from
teammate Theresa Ferraina. The Greyhounds' second strike of the
match came in the 76th minute by Chrstina Gomez on a penalty shot.
Gomez beat American goalkeeper Arianna
Efstathiou to her left on a well-placed shot in the
corner of the net.
American (4-3) controlled the action for a majority of the game,
although the Eagles could not get the ball past Loyola goalkeeper
Brittany Henderson. Arguably the best opportunity for AU came on a
shot from Brooke
Sheppard early in the first half, which was deflected
by Henderson.
In the match, American outshot Loyola 13-6, and held a 7-2
advantage in shots on goal. Kelsey
Brasher led the Eagles with four shots on goal. On the
flip side, Loyola took advantage of its few opportunities, as the
lone shots on goal in the match for the Greyhounds both resulted in
goals.
"Despite the loss, I was pleased with the effort of the team,"
remarked American Head Coach David
Bucciero. "We created enough opportunities to win this
game and I think the statistics back that up. The difference today
is that we did not finish those chances like we had in previous
games. So we will work to improve in this area. We are making
progress as a program and need to put this game behind us."
The Eagles will look to get back on the winning track on Sunday
at 2 p.m. against the Virginia Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va.
