Volleyball Soars Past Howard, 3-0

Box Score

Double-digit kills from Angelina Waterman and Magdalena Tekiel helped push the American University volleyball team to a straight-set victory against cross-town foe Howard on Tuesday night in Bender Arena. American's 3-0 victory came by set scores of 25-12, 25-20 and 25-21.

The Eagles stormed out of the gates in the first set to take an 8-4 lead and never looked back. American (3-7) used an 8-0 run which included three service aces by Claire Recht to push its advantage to 18-6. Several Howard (1-12) errors down the stretch put the first set to bed, 25-12.

The Bison came out as the aggressor in the second set, taking a 5-0 lead to open the frame. American quickly turned the tables though and rattled off seven straight points to take a 12-9 lead. A second 7-0 run midway through the set gave the Eagles a 21-13 advantage and was punctuated by two Tekiel aces and a pair of Waterman kills. The Bison made a run at American late, closing their deficit to three, 21-18, but could not overcome the leader as the Eagles escaped with a 25-20 victory.

The deciding set was closely contested most of the way as the team's exchanged the lead twice and found themselves tied five times. It was the Eagles who would prevail though as a Recht kill broke a 15-all tie and helped American to an 18-15 advantage. Three consecutive Tekiel kills down the stretch helped the Eagles to match point, 25-21.

"We served pretty well tonight and attacked the zone," Head Coach Barry Goldberg commented following the victory. "We need to work a little more with our block but overall it was a good performance."

Waterman scored a match-high 13 kills to lead American and narrowly missed recording her third double-double of the season as she tallied nine digs. Tekiel added 11 kills while Recht notched nine. Recht recorded a career-high four aces as American scored a season-high 10 on the night.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 20, when they host the North Carolina Tar Heels in Bender Arena in a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament First Round. The match can be seen live on the new Eagles Vision TV channel, featuring multiple camera angles, a live scoreboard and analysis from a studio broadcast team and courtside reporters.
