Senior Kelsey
Brasher scored the lone goal of the match in the
24th minute to give the American University women's
soccer team a 1-0 victory at Radford on Sunday afternoon.
Brasher's goal, her second of this season, got past Radford
goalkeeper Lisa Lubke to her right. Brasher fired the shot from 20
yards out.
Playing from ahead after Brasher's strike, American (4-2) was
able to play tough defense and hang on to the 1-0 lead for the rest
of the match. Radford (3-4) was only able to muster two shots on
goal in the entire 90 minutes. American's defensive unit, led by
Olivia
Heditisian, Friederike
Engel, Erin
Koch, Kelly
McLaughlin and Jenna
Stasiewicz helped American goalkeeper Arianna
Efstathiou record her third shutout of the young
season.
In the match, American outshot Radford, 15-6, and held an 8-3
advantage in corner kicks. Brasher was active all match for the
Eagles, firing seven total shots (three on goal), including the
aforementioned game-winning goal.
"I thought we did a lot of positive things today," remarked
American Head Coach David
Bucciero. "We improved on defending the corner kicks
and free kicks. We created a number of corners, which was important
and shows we generated a lot of chances. Once again, our back line
and goalkeeping was really solid in leading us to victory. It was
great to go on the road and get a win in a different environment
from home."
For Brasher, today's goal was the 21st in her career,
tying her for fifth on the American career goals list. Jana
Lee, who played at AU from 2003-06, also had 21 goals in her
career.
The Eagles will be back in action this Friday, September 18 with
a 4 p.m. home match against Loyola (Md.).
