WASHINGTON - American University women's soccer struck first against Boston University on Saturday afternoon, but two first-half goals by the Terriers proved to be the difference in a 2-1 loss at Reeves Field. The Eagles took the lead on a penalty kick in the 21st minute before BU answered twice before halftime, while freshman goalkeeper
Riley Molbury made 11 saves to keep American within one the rest of the way.
Notable
- Senior Lauren Sanders converted on the penalty-kick opportunity for American, doing so for the third time in three tries this season.Â
- Sanders' four goals lead the Eagles overall in 2026.
- Molbury's 11 saves were just one shy of her season high. She leads the PL with 6.92 saves per contest.
How it Happened
- Seniors Bella Vozar and Bella Miller both put early pressure on the BU defense, but their shots on goal in the opening 12 minutes were both saved by the Terriers' goalkeeper Bridget Carr.
- Molbury made her first save in the 17th minute, and then had to gear up for a BU penalty kick in the 18th.
- Kat Slott took the PK opportunity for the Terriers, but Molbury was not forced into action as the shot sailed well high of the crossbar.
- Vozar was fouled in the box in the 21st minute, leading to the Eagles' penalty kick, and Sanders placed it perfectly to the left of Carr for a 1-0 lead.
- AU had two penalty corners in the following five minutes, but the final 20 minutes of the half saw BU turn up the pressure.
- With 15 minutes left in the half, BU's Georgia Prouty took the ball around a defender and left-footed it from the top left of the box into the lower right corner past a diving Molbury.
- Molbury made another pair of saves before the second and final BU goal.
- Olivia Avellar collected the ball in the right corner and crossed it to the back post where Ariana Schwinn-Clanton headed it in for the 2-1 lead.
- Eight of Molbury's 11 saves were made in the second half to keep the Eagles within one.
- Three of those stops came in the final eight minutes, the most impressive being a punch-out save with six minutes to go on a close-range shot from Ciara Kennedy.
 Up Next
- The Eagles' next two games are on the road the next two weekends. First up is a 7 p.m. contest at Navy on Friday, Oct. 23, followed by a 1 p.m. game at Holy Cross on Sunday, Nov. 1.
