Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore Mikaila Weaver
scored her first goal of the young season 1:44 into overtime to
give the American University women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over
Bryant. Freshman Kristin Piorun was
credited with the assist on the game-winning attack.
American (2-1) opened up the sudden-death overtime stanza with
an aggressive mentality, and quickly penetrated deep into Bryant
(0-2) territory. Less than a minute in to the period, freshman Michelle
Montilio fired a shot just wide. Moments later, Piorun fired a
shot on goal, which was deflected by Bryant goalkeeper Katie
Mitchell. The rebound bounced directly back to Piorun, who passed
it over to Weaver. She did the rest, knocking it into the back of
the net for the game-winner.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard near the end of the first half
on sophomore Patricia Bailey's
first-career goal. Senior Erin Koch chipped the
ball deep to a streaking Bailey, who beat a sliding Mitchell to the
ball and knocked it into the net.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Bryant scored its lone goal in
the 60th minute on a long, straightaway shot by Morgan Derick.
For the majority of the 90-plus minutes, American controlled the
action, although was unable to convert several good scoring
opportunities throughout the contest. The Eagles outshot Bryant
17-4 in the match.
Sophomore Arianna
Efstathiou was again solid in net for the Eagles, recording two
saves and allowing the lone goal.
"Today was a great way for us to finish off the weekend," said
American Head Coach David Bucciero. "I
am extremely proud of the entire team, especially the players who
came off the bench, for putting together a total team victory. We
played a solid brand of soccer today, and look forward to
continuing to improve."
This was American's first overtime victory since September 8,
2004, when then-freshman Siohban Gillan gave the Eagles a 2-1
victory at Towson.
For Weaver, her overtime game-winner was her second-career goal.
Her only other conversion came a year ago yesterday against Ohio.
The match was part of the D.C. Invitational, which took place
over the weekend at Reeves Field. In Sunday's earlier match,
Georgetown defeated Georgia Southern, 3-0.
American will play at Reeves Field for each of its next two
matches. On Wednesday, September 2, the Eagles will entertain
Richmond at 4:30 p.m. A week later, on September 9, American will
return to Reeves for a 4 p.m. showdown versus Maryland. Both
matches can be watched live on Eagles Vision TV, which can be
accessed through AUeagles.com.
