Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Carleigh Morba and
Kelsey
Brasher each scored a goal for the American University women's
soccer team, leading the Eagles to a 2-0 victory over Georgia
Southern on Friday afternoon at Reeves Field.
American (1-1) controlled the action from the outset, and
converted its first goal in the 13th minute. Junior Brooke
Sheppard fired the ball across the middle to the freshman
Morba, who netted it past Georgia Southern (0-2) goalkeeper Lauren
Santos for her first-career goal.
Neither team was able to muster any great scoring chances in the
rest of the first half, although the second stanza opened up with a
game-saving stop by AU goalkeeper Arianna
Efstathiou in the 49th minute. On a breakaway for
Georgia Southern's Sara Oland, Efstathiou was able to slide in
front of the approaching shot and knock the ball out of play. This
was Georgia Southern's only shot on goal in the entire match.
Brasher gave American much-needed insurance with her first goal
of the season in the 68th minute to make the score 2-0.
Freshman Jasmine
Mohandesi was credited with her first-career assist. Brasher
fired a high-arcing shot from the far-left corner of the goal box,
slipping it over the outstretched arms of Santos. The ball caught
the post and a friendly-bounce into the top right part of the net
gave the Eagles the final margin of victory. For Brasher, it was
her 20th career goal.
American outshot Georgia Southern 18-5 in the match, and held a
10-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Efstathiou was solid in goal for American when opportunities
arose, picking up her second-career shutout.
"This was a great team win," commented American Head Coach David
Bucciero. "We created a lot of opportunities for ourselves, and
that was great to see. We got key contributions from a number of
players, which is certainly a testament to our depth. I thought the
back line really stood out today in a positive way. We look forward
to getting back at it on Sunday."
