The American University men's and women's cross
country teams competed at the George Mason Invitational on Saturday
morning at Bull Run Park in Manassas, Va. Both teams competed very
well against some of the top teams in the region, including
Georgetown and Virginia who are nationally ranked 10th and 14th,
respectively, on the men's side.
The men's team, which was comprised mainly of the
team's freshmen and sophomores, finished sixth overall in the
team competition. The Eagles were led by freshman Alex
Lyons, who ran a time of 27:00 in his first career 8K.
Also scoring for the Eagles were Jeremy
Scheid (27:16), Chris
Tonn (27:17), Zach
Weinstein (27:30), and Anthony
Rowe (28:10).
“It was really important to all of the guys to run well
today, and I think it certainly showed,” commented Assistant
Coach Edmund
Burke. “There are guys here today who are all
just looking to get better and to prove something. There's a
lot of hunger in this team right now, which is always a good
thing,” he added.
On the women's side, the Eagles placed 7th in the team
competition and were led by senior Rachel
Forcino who finished in a time of 23:11 over the 6K
distance. Joining Forcino for the women's team were fellow
senior Greta
Wicklund (23:24), freshmen Natalie
Omundson (24:33) and Kellie
Quinn (26:30), and sophomore Lauren
Scholl (26:50).
“Before the race, we talked about finishing strong, and I
think that all the girls did a nice job of that,” Assistant
Coach Bridget
Bowers stated following the race.
Both teams now have two weeks until they head down to
Charlottesville, Va., for the UVA Panorama Farms Invitational on
October 16th and Easton, Pa., for the Leopard Invitational on
October 17th.
