On a day two of the program’s most celebrated middle blockers were honored, the American University volleyball team matched its single-match record for block assists in a 3-0 win over Lafayette in Bender Arena on Senior Day. Senior Claire Recht totaled 10 block assists in the victory while classmate Ann Recht notched five, helping the Eagles to a total of 30 block assists for the match. Angelina Waterman recorded her third double-double of the season as the Eagles won by set scores of 25-11, 25-19, 25-7.

American (12-11, 6-3) rushed out to an 11-3 lead in the first set using a 7-0 run which was capped off by an A. Recht kill. Consecutive blocks by C. Recht and Magdalena Tekiel pushed the score to 17-5 and a C. Recht and Cassandra Ricketts block gave American a 21-10 edge. The eagles would record two more blocks down the stretch as they easily took set point, 25-11.

Lafayette (12-10, 3-6) played evenly with American early in the second set but a 6-0 run broke a 10-all tie and put the Eagles on top for good, 16-10. Consecutive kills brought the Leopards back to within three, 19-16, before American was able to score six of the frame’s final nine points to take the set, 25-19.

It was all American in the third set as Lafayette committed eight errors in the frame’s first 14 points to give the Eagles an 11-3 advantage. American extended its lead to 15-5 on a C. Recht and Katerina Cinkova block and used a 7-0 run late in the frame to push the score to 22-6. A Waterman kill secured match point for the Eagles, 25-7.

American totaled 30 block assists in the match, equaling the program record set in 1991. C. Recht led the way with 10 block assists, just shy of the individual record of 11, while Ricketts added six and A. Recht five. Waterman scored a match-high 10 kills to go with 10 digs, earning the junior her third double-double of the season. Cynammon Burns notched 13 digs.

Prior to the match, American recognized its three graduating seniors with a special Senior Night ceremony. Burns, A. Recht and C. Recht were each recognized for their achievements over the past four seasons which include helping the Eagles to 87 victories and three consecutive Patriot League Regular Season and Tournament Championships.

American will be back in action on October 29 as the team welcomes Navy into Bender Arena at 7 p.m. The match can be seen live on the new Eagles Vision TV Channel, featuring multiple camera angles, a live scoreboard and anlysis from a studio broadcast team and courtside reporters.
