On a day two of the program’s most celebrated middle
blockers were honored, the American University volleyball team
matched its single-match record for block assists in a 3-0 win over
Lafayette in Bender Arena on Senior Day. Senior Claire
Recht totaled 10 block assists in the victory while
classmate Ann
Recht notched five, helping the Eagles to a total of
30 block assists for the match. Angelina
Waterman recorded her third double-double of the
season as the Eagles won by set scores of 25-11, 25-19, 25-7.
American (12-11, 6-3) rushed out to an 11-3 lead in the first set
using a 7-0 run which was capped off by an A. Recht kill.
Consecutive blocks by C. Recht and Magdalena
Tekiel pushed the score to 17-5 and a C. Recht and Cassandra
Ricketts block gave American a 21-10 edge. The eagles
would record two more blocks down the stretch as they easily took
set point, 25-11.
Lafayette (12-10, 3-6) played evenly with American early in the
second set but a 6-0 run broke a 10-all tie and put the Eagles on
top for good, 16-10. Consecutive kills brought the Leopards back to
within three, 19-16, before American was able to score six of the
frame’s final nine points to take the set, 25-19.
It was all American in the third set as Lafayette committed eight
errors in the frame’s first 14 points to give the Eagles an
11-3 advantage. American extended its lead to 15-5 on a C. Recht
and Katerina
Cinkova block and used a 7-0 run late in the frame to
push the score to 22-6. A Waterman kill secured match point for the
Eagles, 25-7.
American totaled 30 block assists in the match, equaling the
program record set in 1991. C. Recht led the way with 10 block
assists, just shy of the individual record of 11, while Ricketts
added six and A. Recht five. Waterman scored a match-high 10 kills
to go with 10 digs, earning the junior her third double-double of
the season. Cynammon
Burns notched 13 digs.
Prior to the match, American recognized its three graduating
seniors with a special Senior Night ceremony. Burns, A. Recht and
C. Recht were each recognized for their achievements over the past
four seasons which include helping the Eagles to 87 victories and
three consecutive Patriot League Regular Season and Tournament
Championships.
American will be back in action on October 29 as the team welcomes
Navy into Bender Arena at 7 p.m. The match can be seen live on the
