Volleyball Opens Weekend With 3-0 Over Lehigh

Magdalena Tekiel, Ann Recht and Angelina Waterman each recorded double-digit kills as the American University volleyball team defeated Lehigh Friday night, 3-0, in Bender Arena. Tekiel led all scorers with 12 kills while Recht and Waterman each added 10. The Eagles defeated the Mountain Hawks by set scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 25-21.

American (11-11, 5-3) opened the first set with a 4-0 run and extended its advantage to 14-5 following a Tekiel kill. A 7-0 run which included two Tekiel aces pushed the lead to 22-7 as the team easily rolled to a 25-11 victory. American hit .500 for the set, scoring 14 kills on 24 attempts while holding Lafayette (10-13, 3-5) to a .000 hitting percentage.

The Leopards came out quickly in the second, taking a 5-0 lead. American, however, quickly responded with its own five-point burst to tie the score at five. The Eagles opened a slight lead, 15-12, following two Lafayette errors before scoring seven of the final eight points to run away with a 25-16 win.

The third set was tightly contested from beginning to end but it was American who was able to get the upper hand down the stretch to take the victory. The Eagles took a 13-11 lead on a Cassandra Ricketts kills but consecutive points by Lafayette evened the score at 13. American attempted to pull ahead once again, taking a 20-16 advantage, only to see the Leopards come back to even it up at 22. American prevailed though and took the victory by a score of 25-23.

Tekiel scored a match-high 12 kills on 23 attempts to finish with a .248 hitting percentage. She also added seven digs, two aces and two blocks. Recht and Waterman each tallied 10 kills with hitting percentages of .389 and .346, respectively. Recht led the defensive effort for American as well, totaling four blocks while Cynammon Burns dug 16 balls.

American will return to the court tomorrow, Saturday, October 24, against Lehigh at 4 p.m. Three Eagles, Burns, Recht and Claire Recht, will be honored before the match with a special senior day ceremony.
