On the strength of a season-high .403 hitting percentage, the
American University volleyball team defeated Holy Cross on Saturday
afternoon, 3-1, in Worcester, Mass. Angelina
Waterman scored a match-high 19 kills while Magdalena
Tekiel recorded her second double-double in as many
days with 18 kills and 17 digs. The Eagles earned the victory by
set scores of 25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18.
The first set was played evenly through the first 22 points
until back-to-back kills by the Eagles put American (11-10, 4-3) on
top for good, 13-11. American improved its advantage to four points
on a Tekiel kill, 18-14, and following a Cynammon
Burns service ace and Holy Cross (3-19, 1-6) error the
Eagles led by six, 21-15. American scored four consecutive points
down the stretch and took set point, 25-16, on Tekiel's fifth kill
of the frame.
American gained hold of the lead early in the second set and
took a 12-8 advantage following a Krysta
Cicala and Claire
Recht block. A 4-0 run pushed the Eagles lead to as
many as eight points, 21-13, and a Tekiel kill gave American the
set, 25-18. Holy Cross would rebound in the third set, taking an
early 12-8 lead and holding off a late American surge to win the
set by a score of 25-23.
The Eagles broke a five-all tie in the fourth set with a 5-0
run, which was punctuated by two Recht kills, to open a 10-5 lead.
Consecutive kills by Tekiel and Waterman pushed American's
advantage to eight points, 18-10, as the Eagles easily rolled to
match point, 25-18, following a Tekiel kill.
American finished the match with a season-high .403 hitting
percentage, scoring 69 kills against only 13 errors. Waterman led
all scorers with 19 kills and five digs. One day after picking up
her first career double-double, Tekiel recorded her second with 18
kills and a career-high 17 digs. Cassandra
Ricketts and Recht tallied 14 kills and 13 kills,
respectively, while Cicala dished out 59 assists. Burns notched a
career-high 21 digs.
American will be back in action with two matches next weekend,
October 23 and 24, in Bender Arena. The Eagles will first take to
the court on Friday against Lehigh at 7 p.m. and then will return
on Saturday to host Lafayette at 4 p.m. Friday's match against
