WASHINGTON - The American University volleyball
team defeated Holy Cross, 3-0, Saturday afternoon as the Eagles
celebrated Senior Day. Ivana Cebakova, Christina
Nash, Tessa Paganini and
Rubena Sukaj
were each honored for their careers at AU during a halftime
ceremony. Nash led the Eagles offense with 29 assists while
Cebakova paced the defense with 11 digs.
American extended its season-high winning streak to 12 matches
against the Crusaders with set scores of 25-13, 25-12, 25-13. The
Eagles took control of the first set early and quickly opened a 10
point lead, 16-6. After a Holy Cross timeout, AU (17-6, 9-0)
continued its strong play and easily took set point, 25-13. Katerina
Cinkova led American in the set with five kills on six attempts
and zero errors while Rebecca Heath, Nash
and Claire
Recht each scored there kills.
In the second set AU's defense took over as the Eagles forced
five-consecutive errors, including two blocks, to take a 10 point
advantage, 12-2. After four straight points by Holy Cross moved the
score to 12-6, AU regained its composure and used two kills from Ann Recht to move
its lead to 11, 17-6. The Eagles lead reached as many as 14 points,
22-8, before taking set point, 25-12, on a Nash kill.
AU remained in control in the third set as kills by Heath and C.
Recht bookended three straight Crusader errors to give the Eagles a
5-0 lead. American extended its lead to nine points, 13-4, on four
aces in five serves from Cebakova. After pushing their lead to 10,
18-8, the Eagles continued to roll down the stretch and took match
point on an Angelina
Waterman kill, 25-13.
Nash tallied 29 assists and five kills as she guided AU's
offense to a combined .378 hitting percentage. Eight different
Eagles recorded a kill in the win led by eight from Heath and seven
from Cinkova. AU also recorded 10 aces in the win, including five
from Cebakova and three from Heath.
Cebakova paced AU's defense, which held Holy Cross to a -.039
hitting percentage, with 11 digs. A. Recht notched four total
blocks and Waterman added there total as American finished the
match with nine blocks.
American will be in action again this Thursday, Oct. 30, as the
team travels to Annapolis, Md., to take on Navy at 7 p.m.
