WASHINGTON - A long road trip to Worcester,
Mass., the previous day may have affected the Eagles energy level,
as the team came out sluggish and fell behind one game to none to
Holy Cross Tuesday night. AU was able to rebound though, and
defeated the Crusaders, 3-1.
The match opened AU's Patriot League schedule and the team is
now 1-0 in the league. Dating back two seasons, the Eagles have won
25 consecutive PL matches.
After its 30-22 defeat in the first frame, AU came back with
three consecutive victories of 30-22, 30-23 and 30-18.
In game one, the team hit for a season low -.121 percent with
eleven errors and recorded only seven kills.
In game two, AU's offense completed a 180 degree transformation,
as it hit .406 with 18 kills and only five errors. The offense was
powered by AU's workhorse, Rubena Sukaj
(Tirana, Albania/Asim Vokshi), who hit a game high eight kills.
Both Cassandra
Ricketts (Sandy, Utah/Brighton) and Chelsa Brooks
(Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) added three kills a piece and hit
at a 1.000 and .750 percentage, respectively.
The Eagles continued their turnaround in game three off the
setting of Christina Nash
(Princeton, Fla./Coral Reef). Nash tallied 12 assists in the game
and directed the offense to a match low four errors. Sukaj was
again the game's high scorer with five kills and a .500 hitting
percent. Brooks also played a feature role in the game, recording
three kills on seven attempts.
AU put the match away in game four, hitting .400 and again
committed only four errors. Ricketts hit a game high five kills and
Katerina
Cinkova (Morgan Hill, Calif./Live Oak) smashed a personal best
four.
American returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 19, with a
