WASHINGTON - The American University volleyball
team continued its winning ways Friday night, defeating Patriot
League foe Lafayette, 3-0. The Eagles are now 14-6 on the season
and 6-0 in the PL.
AU's three-game victory came 30-27, 30-17, 30-16. It was the
team's 10th victory inside Bender Arena this season and the seventh
time that the Eagles have won at home in straight sets.
The story for American on this night was their strong offense.
After a slow start to the game, the attack picked up with the
Eagles hitting at a .390 percentage in the second game, a .462
percentage in the third game and finishing the match with a .323
average. Angelina
Waterman hit a match high .615 as she connected for eight kills
and committed zero errors. Chelsa Brooks also
figured heavily into the match's outcome, ending the night with 13
kills on 20 attempts. Claire Recht may
have had the most impressive all-around performance for the Eagles
as she hit for a .400 average with eight kills and a career best
eight total blocks. Cassandra
Ricketts tied a season high with five blocks and added six
kills on offense.
In game one, the Leopards were able to keep the score close and
threatened to take the game down the stretch. With the score at
21-20, in AU's favor, the Eagles proceeded to go on a 6-2 run
powered by two Brooks spikes that opened the lead and allowed
American to cruise to the victory.
Game two was never within reach for Lafayette as AU opened a
10-4 lead out of the gate. Brooks and Rubena Sukaj each
scored five kills in the frame as Recht recorded her
second-straight stanza with three blocks. Waterman checked into the
match for the first time in game two and proceeded to record four
kills in seven attempts. The Eagles were successful on 19 of 41
attacks in the game and committed just three errors.
American was as successful with their attack in the third game
as it recorded 20 kills on 39 attempts with only two errors. Sukaj
notched another eight kills in the game and ended with a match high
15. Christina
Nash successfully directed the offense in game three as she
tallied 16 assists and pitched in on the defensive side with three
digs. Recht recorded four of her kills in the frame and Waterman
added four of her own.
AU will return to action tomorrow, Oct. 13, in a 2 p.m. showdown
with Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks will be entering Bender Arena on
the wrong side of a pair of winning streaks as the Eagles have now
won 32-consecutive PL matches and have not lost at home in 24
matches.
