Elizabeth Maloney (Toronto, Ontario/Richview C.I.) and Rubena Sukaj (Tirana, Albania/Asim Vokshi) each had 20 kills to lead the American University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win against Binghamton Friday afternoon at the Big Red Invitational. The match went 30-24, 30-24, 27-30 and 30-26 in the Eagles' favor.
The Eagles' attack was precise in the first two games as the team combined for .516 and .361 hitting percentages, respectively. American slipped up in the third game for a .039 percentage, but bounced back with 19 kills in the fourth game for the match win.
Numerous Eagles had season-highs in Friday night's match. Maloney's 20 kills were a 2006 best and libero Ivana Cebakova's (Brno, Czech Republic/Ludvika Danka) seven service aces were also a career-best. Chelsa Brooks (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) was the Eagles' most efficient offensive player with a .444 hitting percentage and a four-game season-high of 16 kills.
American returns to the Big Red Invitational tomorrow for matches against regionally-ranked Cornell and St. John's.
