The Yale men's basketball team opened the second half with and 8-0 run to open up what was a one-point game at halftime, and held American University off in the second stanza in a 70-53 loss for the Eagles Saturday at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
Yale held leads between six and 10 points for much of the first nine minutes of the second half. It looked as though American would make a run, when with 11:10 left Cornelio Guibunda (Maputo, Mozambique/King & Low-Heywood Thomas School) registered a traditional three-point play to pull American to within four points. However, Yale's Eric Flato hit a three-pointer 25 seconds later and American got no closer than six the rest of the way.
Guibunda finished with a career-high 13 points and three blocks. Arvydas Eitutavicius (Klaipeda, Lithuania/Laurinburg Institute [N.C.]) had a team-high 14 points, while Andre Ingram (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) rounded out three Eagles in double-figures with 10 points.
Caleb Holmes finished with 17 points to lead the Bulldogs, including 12 second-half points. Yale improves to 2-6.
American, which falls to 7-3 with the loss, has a two-week break before the Eagles' resume play. AU is at Maryland on Dec. 23 for a 1 p.m. start.
