American University Knocks off Elon by 25, 76-51

Washington, D.C. - Senior Glenn Stokes (Silver Spring, Md./Tallahassee CC) had his finest outing as an Eagle, as he led AU to a 76-51 victory over the Phoenix of Elon. Stokes eclipsed his scoring mark of 25 by scoring 26 points on a near-perfect eight-of-nine shooting from the field, including a perfect four-of-four from beyond the arc. Stokes also had seven rebounds, four assists and five steals in just 30 minutes of action.

American got off to a fast start and led 15-2 after the first eight minutes of the game with five different Eagles accounting for the 15 points. Elon could never get closer than eight points in the first stanza and American dominated the scoring in the paint, 14-4. They had 15 points off of turnovers in the first 20 minutes as well.
In the second half Elon never cut the lead to single digits, and gradually over the last ten minutes the bulge went beyond 20 points.

Sophomore Matej Cresnik (Velenje, Sovenia/Univerza V Ljubljani) had another standout performance with 14 points, two blocks and several dunks, The most impressive of which came with 15:05 remaining in the game. Stokes, who had just hit a three, grabbed a defensive rebound and found Cresnik cutting to the bucket. A perfect pass gave Cresnik the dunk opportunity and a chance for a free throw, which he converted. The flurry put AU up 23 points, 48-25.

Steve Miles (Alexandria, Va./Coastal Carolina) scored in double figures (ten points ) for the third time in the last four games for AU and also had three boards and two assists. Jamaal Caterina (Portland, Me./Deering) played ten minutes (a career high) and was two-for-two from the floor .

The Eagles were outrebounded by five (31-26), but forced 23 turnovers and had 11 steals, both season highs. American was outstanding from the field, hitting on 56.3% (9-16) from beyond the three-point line and 58.7% (27-46) for the game.

Scottie Rice led Elon with 14 points and two boards while Rasmi Gamble had 11 points and Quinton McCleod managed ten points.

American (4-5) is now off until Monday when they will travel to Staten Island to play Wagner on December 30, 2002.
