Great Shooting Propels American to 86-72 Win at NC A&T

GREENSBORO, NC -- Vladimir Buscaglia scored game-high 20 points and American shot 64 percent from the field, including an incredible 61 percent from three-point range, as the Eagles defeated host North Carolina A&T, 86-72. It was the second road win of the season for American, which won just one road contest all last year.

American (3-4) came out of the gate quickly, claiming a 15-4 lead after just four minutes of play. An 11-2 run midway through the opening period gave the Eagles a 29-17 lead with 8:19 to play in the half, and then they opened a 41-24 lead with just 2:30 left. Buscaglia had 14 points in the half on the strength of four three's.

Starting the second half with an 11-point advantage, American kept pace with its first-half effort. The Eagles used a 23-8 run over the opening eight minutes of the second half to claim a 69-43 lead. The spurt was capped by a Nick Boyd dunk off a behind-the-back pass from Steven Miles, and a three-pointer by Buscaglia.

American's largest advantage of the game came with 6:48 remaining when it led, 76-48.

North Carolina A&T did not go away however, and capitalized on strong outside shooting to chip away at the lead. A 22-4 spurt over the next five minute, which included four three-pointers, cut the American lead to just 10 (80-70) with a minute to play. The Aggies would get no closer, as Miles knocked down two free throws and a late dunk by Jason Thomas sealed the win.

It was American's finest shooting effort of the season by far, and it was also the first time the Eagles shot better than 50 percent from the field since Dec. 2, 2000, when the Eagles went 26-of-52 from the floor against Coastal Carolina.

American was 33-of-52 from the field, and an incredible 14-of-23 from three-point range. Four Eagles had at least two three's, with Buscaglia leading the charge with six.

Five Eagles were in double figures, paced by Buscaglia's 20 points. Miles added 19, and Boyd came off the bench to net 13. Patrick Doctor, limited to just three minutes of action in the first half due to foul trouble, netted 13, and Keith Gray had 10.

Glenn Stokes had a game-high eight assists. Ricardas Patiejunas, playing his best game of the season, had six points and four rebounds, while going two-of-three from three-point range.

Anthony Debro led North Carolina A&T with 16 points, while Landon Beckwith and Bruce Jenkins added 13 and 12, respectively. Jenkins also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

American returns to action on Monday, Dec. 10, when it travles to cross-town rival Howard for a 7:00 p.m. tip with the Bison. The Eagles will not be home again until Dec. 29, when they host Wagner in Bender Arena at 2:00 p.m.
