Joeandra Gerena-Levy joined the American University Athletic Training staff in the fall of 2022 and was named the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine in July of 2026 after previously serving as the associate athletic trainer (2024-26) and as an athletic trainer (2022-24) before that. In addition to heading up a staff of seven, Gerena-Levy is primarily responsible for working with the women’s basketball team.
 
Gerena-Levy came to American from the Orthopaedic Associates of Michigan where she was a clinical athletic trainer, covering everything from clinical duties ranging from patient intake and recording patient history to pre/post-surgical evaluation of knee and shoulder injuries.
 
Prior to that, Gerena-Levy gained experience at South Carolina State University and Troy University. At SCSU she managed and led the Bulldog's sports medicine coverage for the 2021 preseason football camp, supervised graduate assistants, coordinated pre-participation physical processes for all incoming student-athletes in the department, and handled office work such as managing insurance claims, billing, and inventory. With Troy, Gerena-Levy was employed under ATI Physical Therapy as an outreach athletic trainer, serving as the Head Athletic Trainer for Men’s and Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country.
 
Gerena-Levy earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in ethics and pre-physical therapy from Marquette University and earned her Master of Science in Athletic Training from Seton Hall.
