Head coach Megan Gebbia (pronounced: JEB-ee-ah) firmly established herself as one of the all-time greats in American University athletics history in 2021-22, breaking the women's basketball program record for all-time wins while leading the team to its third Patriot League title and NCAA Tournament appearance. In her now nine seasons at the helm of the program, she has accrued an overall record of 160-106 (.602), including 105-48 (.686) in the Patriot League, and 97-28 (.776) in Bender Arena. In fact, all three Patriot League titles and NCAA appearances (2015, 2018, 2022) have come under Gebbia's leadership, along with a couple of WNIT berths in 2014 and 2019.
With the 56-48 win against Bucknell on February 9, 2022, Gebbia clinched her 151st career victory at AU and surpassed Jeff Thatcher (1989-2000: 150 wins) atop the history books. That victory also kicked off a 7-1 run to close the 2021-22 regular season and give the Eagles the No. 2 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. Gebbia continued her undefeated run in Bender Arena in the postseason, including a 65-54 win over Bucknell in the Patriot League Championship, to secure the team's third PL title during her tenure.
The Eagles were helped along the way by three All-Patriot League selections with seniors Jade Edwards (First Team), Emily Fisher (Third Team, All-Defensive Team) and Taylor Brown (Third Team). Fisher was also voted the Tournament MVP and Edwards joined her on the All-Tournament Team.
AU was selected as the 14-seed in the NCAA Tournament and fell to three-seed Michigan, who advanced into the Elite Eight, in Ann Arbor.
A two-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, Gebbia's nine years with the Eagles has also included two of the most historic seasons in program history starting with the then-program record 24-9 run during the 2014-15 season to lead the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance. The Eagles topped that performance three years later with a 26-7 overall record to advance into the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history.
Gebbia and her staff celebrated their 100th victory on January 6, 2019, at home, mere days after Ohio broke their 23-0 win streak in Bender Arena - a run that ranked sixth among active runs in Division I by its end.
Win-loss records aside, Gebbia has also mentored some of the top players in program history, including three Patriot League Players of the Year, five PL Scholar-Athletes of the Year, one PL Defensive Player of the Year, one CoSIDA Academic All-American First Team honoree, two CoSIDA Academic All-District selections, two ECAC Division I All-Stars, 25 All-Patriot League selections, and three NCAA Woman of the Year nominees. Of the five Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year, three were also selected as PL Offensive Players of the Year with Jen Dumiak (2014-15), Emily Kinneston (2017-18) and Cecily Carl (2018-19), making AU one of only two teams in league history to have players win both awards in a single season alongside Holy Cross (four from 1995-99).
Foreshadows of her storied career were quick to appear, as she became the winningest first-year coach in program history with a 22-10 record and the program's and Patriot League's first postseason at-large berth, facing Seton Hall in the First Round of the WNIT. A finalist for the Maggie Dixon Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award, Gebbia's squad also ranked 13th among Division I women's basketball teams with a 3.510 GPA to land in the WBCA Academic Top-25 Honor Roll.
The team's success continued to grow in 2014-15 with a program-record 14-9 record and the program's first Patriot League title and NCAA Tournament berth. Guided by the 2015 Patriot League Coach of the Year, and the PL Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in Jen Dumiak and Shaquilla Curtis, respectively, the 14-seed Eagles went on to nearly upset 3-seed Iowa in the NCAA First Round, falling to the Hawkeyes by only eight points, 75-67.
The 2017-18 season played out in similar fashion, starting with a new program-record 26-7 regular season record and the team's first undefeated season at home (16-0) since the 1970s. Earning her second Patriot League Coach of the Year award, Gebbia once again mentored the development of a Patriot League Player of the Year in Emily Kinneston, and nearly saw another upset against a 3-seed in the NCAA Tournament as the 14-seed Eagles fell to UCLA, 71-60.
