Jeff Kinney enters his eighth season at American University on the coaching sidelines. In his first two years, he served as the team's graduate assistant, but was elevated to first assistant coach prior to the 2005 season. A 2003 graduate of AU, Kinney was known as one of the toughest players on the team, dominating play at midfield.
Kinney has been involved with top level youth soccer in the area these past seven years. His club teams have won numerous national tournaments and have been consistently ranked in the top-10 in the country. He has worked with the Region I staff, as well as the D.C. United Youth Development Program. He previously served as the Director of Coaching for RFC, formerly known as the Reston Football Club, a nationally prominent club. Currently, Kinney is the assistant coach for the Under-18 D.C. United Academy, which finished in second place in the nation in this year's U.S. Soccer Federation Academy League.
"Jeff has been and continues to be involved in every facet of the program," commented Head Coach Todd West. "He coordinates our recruiting effort and is a tremendous asset during training and matches. Jeff certainly has positioned himself to become a top Division I head coach in the very near future."
During his playing career at AU, Kinney played a vital role on back-to-back NCAA Tournament teams in the 2001 and 2002 seasons. In 2001, the Eagles won the Patriot League Championship and reached the NCAA Sweet 16, losing to the eventual National Champion North Carolina in double overtime.
In 2002, Kinney was named a Verizon Academic All-American and was honored with the Verizon Academic All-District II award. He also earned two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Penn State/Nike Classic All-Tournament Team, Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and Soccer America Team of the Week honors.
Kinney currently holds a USSF "B" National License. He resides in Reston, Va.
