Gordon Austin '84 (inducted 2001)
One of the finest basketball players to ever don the AU Red and Blue, Gordon Austin set a standard of excellence during his four years on the hardwood. Making his mark on the school record book, Austin is the all-time leader in assists for a career (691) and a season (247). He also ranks second in career steals (235) and steals in a season (91), though he held both records upon graduation. As a senior, he finished fourth in assists per game in NCAA Division I and was named Honorable Mention All-America by the Sporting News. Yet, it was not Austin’s statistical achievements that he is best known for. A winner in every sense of the word, he helped lead the Eagles to an impressive 78-39 record during his four years, a run that is unmatched by any other four-year span in school history. Included in that total were back-to-back National Invitational Tournament appearances and one of the biggest wins ever for the program when an Austin-led Eagle squad defeated fifth-ranked Georgetown, 62-61, in the Capital Centre on Dec. 16, 1982.
Arthur L. Beatty, Jr. '69 (inducted 2005)
Arthur Leon Beatty, Jr. grew up in Washington, D.C., playing basketball. By age 13, Arthur reached over six feet tall and went on to play varsity basketball at McKinley Technical Senior High School. Upon graduation he reached 7’1’’ and accepted a scholarship to American University to play basketball. Among his accomplishments, he was recognized as the Most Outstanding Senior Athlete and named to the All Metro Basketball Team in 1968. Beatty finished second in the NCAA in rebounding as a junior and was AU’s leading scorer in 1968. He was also included in the 1968-69 Edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Beatty finished his career with 1,126 rebounds, which is third all-time at American. He also holds the third (458 rebounds) and ninth-best (390) single-season rebounding years in AU history. Arthur graduated from American with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interior Design. Drafted in the third round by two U.S. professional teams - the ABA’s New York Nets and the NBA’s Phoenix Suns - in 1968, Arthur accepted an offer from the Belgium pro club, Racing Mechelen, which included free tuition at Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts. While playing three games a week in Belgium, he also studied his passion for the arts. Arthur said, “I made my choice to become an artist instead of a ballplayer, and I’ve never regretted it.”
W. James Birthright (inducted 1969)
W. James Birthright was a member of American’s first basketball team. He joined the Eagles for the inaugural 1926-27 season and led the team to a 20-14 record in two seasons. Brown enters the Cassell Hall of Fame as an accomplished member of the Eagles teams from 1973-1977. He is one of 14 AU players to finish his career with over 1,000 points (1,387) and 500 rebounds (546).
Calvin Brown '77 (inducted 2015)
Known for his hard work and boundless enthusiasm, Brown was voted by his teammates the team MVP in his junior and senior years, as well as being an All-East Coast Conference selection both seasons. Brown was invited to participate in the 1975 Pan American Games tryouts and was sleected in the 7th round of the 1977 NBA Draft by the hometown Washington Bullets. Brown received his bachelor’s degree from the School of Communication in 1978.
George L. Brown '40 (inducted 1970)
Known as “Moe” to his teammates and friends, George Brown played four sports during his time at American. He was very humble even though he was a football star and had great athletic ability. His coaches boasted his consistent effort and hard work during practice and during competition. George played guard for the basketball team and had devastating range on the court. He was a smooth, level-headed player who tended to keep his team poised with his leadership qualities. George also led the way for establishing a baseball team at American. In 1938, he wrote articles on why there should be a team and had several students sign a petition. Also in 1938, George received the Most Valuable Player Award for the football team at American. He was a great athlete, a good scholar and a friend to everyone.
David L. Carrasco (inducted 1998)
If you are ever traveling west into El Paso on Interstate 10, you might come across the David L. Carrasco Job Corps Center. This mural is dedicated to the former AU basketball coach and athletics director. Named the 1958 NCAA College Division National Coach of the Year, Carrasco’s real commitment was towards integration. “He wasn’t always about winning,” says his son David. During a three-year run starting with the 1957-58 season the Eagles made three straight NCAA College Division National Tournaments under Carrasco. Also, under Carrasco’s command the team won three Mason Dixon Conference titles and earned two NCAA tournament appearances (small college division). Carrasco is one of only four coaches in American’s history to have four straight winning seasons. A leader in the area of racial integration at the college men’s basketball level, Carrasco was recruited by the State Department to teach sports abroad after coaching. David Carrasco passed away in 1990, but his memory lives on in the lives of his players and in the ideals he sought to impart.
Stafford H. “Pop” Cassell (inducted 1970)
Stafford H. “Pop” Cassell coached AU basketball for 11 years and compiled a record of 155-94 from 1937-1942 and from 1946-1952. His teams had six consecutive winning seasons. Cassell was a longtime Athletic Director at American and also coached the football team. However, while his love may have been AU athletics, his biggest contribution to American came later when he became a special assistant to the President of the University, Hurst Anderson.During his time working for the President, the University went through the largest building phase of any time in its history. One project that did not get finished before Cassell passed away was a new field house for the athletic program. However, on Jan. 15, 2003, the basketball floor in Bender Arena was renamed in honor of him. His widow and family was on hand to celebrate the unveiling of the Stafford H. “Pop” Cassell basketball floor.
Ed Clements '60 (inducted 2003)
Ed lettered in basketball, track, cross-country and baseball during his years at AU. His versatility as an athlete earned him 10 letters as a varsity member. On the basketball floor is where Clements really shined. During his tenure at AU, the Eagles won three Mason-Dixon Conference titles and were in the NCAAs (small college division) every year. His outstanding skills as a guard allowed him to average 14 points per game. Ed scored a career-high in the NCAAs versus Wagner, netting 37 points. Ed also served two years as the president of the Varsity Club, was chosen as the Outstanding Senior Athlete and was selected for the Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Ed was a tough competitor and his discipline and hard work in athletics earned him a spot in AU history.
Bartley A. Fulger '48 (inducted 1971)
Bart was a captain for the baseball and basketball teams at American. He also lettered in football and tennis. During the ’42-43 season, Bart was runner-up in the scoring title in basketball, averaging 17.5 points per game. In 1947, Bart was awarded the Jack Dempsey Trophy as outstanding athlete on the American University campus. Off the court, Bart pursued a career in the Navy flying fighter planes and working for the Naval Air Transport Service. A native Washingtonian, his presence on campus will not be forgotten.
Brian Gilgeous '93 (inducted 2004)
In Brian’s final year, he capped off his spectacular career by being selected the 1993 CAA Player of the Year. He averaged 24.1 points per game in CAA conference games and 22.7 points overall. He dazzled the crowd versus Mount Saint Mary’s with a career-high 42 points and he scored 30 or more points on six different occasions. He also recorded five double-doubles and ranked among the top 10 in six different offensive and defensive categories in the CAA. Gilgeous ended his career as the second all-time scoring leader in AU history with 2,013 points and currently is third. He is a member of the 500 rebound club, currently ninth with 688. He is in the top 10 in over 10 offensive categories in Eagle history.
Andre Ingram '07 (inducted 2019)
Andre Ingram became AU’s second-ever NBA player when he scored 19 points with the Los Angeles Lakers in the final game of the 2018 season, a journey 12 years in the making. Ingram spent 12 years in the NBA’s G-League before making his NBA debut in April 2018 as the oldest American rookie in the NBA since at least 1964. At AU, he was a three-time All-Patriot League player, earning first-team honors in 2005 and 2007, and a second-team pick in 2006. Ingram sits sixth on American’s career scoring list with 1,655 points and is among AU’s top all-time 3-point shooters. He was also the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2004.
E. Leroy Ishman '51 (inducted 1995)
“Ish” played basketball during his years at AU and was known for his great ball-handling skills and fierce competitiveness on the court. He was the first player to reach 1,200 points and remains on the all-time scoring list in AU history with 1,371. As a freshman, he scored 238 points and was chosen for the Mason-Dixon Conference Tournament team. In his junior year, he was captain of the varsity squad and was again chosen to the Conference and All-District teams. Ish had very large hands, which helped him lead his team in rebounds and assists during his senior year.
William S. Jones '64 (inducted 1971)
William S. Jones (1957-60) ranks fourth all-time in points with 1,982 and is on many top 10 lists in the offensive categories. In 1960, Jones set an NCAA Division II Tournament game record with 54 points against Evansville. Jones was an outstanding free throw shooter with records in free throw attempts in a season (256), career (814) and free throws made in a season (204). In his senior year, he became AU’s most prolific scorer and was named a NCAA college division First Team All-American. Also, Jones was invited to the 1960 and 1964 U.S. Olympic team tryouts. Jones is one of only two players in AU history to have their jerseys retired.
Bruce R. Kessler, Sr. '29 (inducted 1969)
Bruce Kessler was a member of American University’s first basketball team. Kessler joined the Eagles for the inaugural 1926-27 season.
Robert W. Lamon '50 (inducted 1972)
Bob was an expert ball handler on the basketball court and was known as one of the best set-shot artists in the city of Washington. In 1948, he was placed on the Washington Star’s All-District College second squad. He was part of the 1949 Mason-Dixon Conference Team, averaging 10 points per game as the Eagles went 16-8 that year.
William Mason '66 (inducted 1985)
Bill Mason was a four-year letterwinner on the basketball team and was a starting forward during the 1964-65 season. He was the 1966 recipient of the Stafford H. Cassell Award and named the AU Business School’s top scholar-athlete. Most notably, Bill was the starting centerfielder on AU’s baseball team from 1962-66. He set both the single season and career records for batting average, home runs, runs batted in and slugging percentage. In 1966 Bill became AU’s first-ever player selected in the Major League Baseball draft, being selected by the New York Yankees.
George William Olsen (inducted 1971)
George William Olsen led the Eagles to an overall record of 42-24 in his four years at American, including posting a 12-2 record during his senior season.
Franklin A. Ross '87 (inducted 2007)
Frank Ross is one of the best basketball players to ever don an Eagles uniform. He ranks in the top-10 in 12 separate statistical categories, including fifth all-time in career scoring with 1,921 points. In his senior season, he finished ranked eighth in the nation with a 25.3 points per game average, the second-highest scoring average in school history. His 86 three-pointers in his senior season - the first in which the NCAA implemented the three-point line - stood as the school record for 21 years before Garrison Carr drained over 100 triples in back-to-back seasons. Ross was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the fifth round (108th pick) of the 1987 National Basketball Association draft. He also participated in free agent camp for the Washington Bullets prior to the 1988 NBA season. Ross graduated from American University in 1987, with his Bachelor of Arts in Communications.
Ray Ruhling '68 (inducted 2020)
An Eagle standout in the 60s, Ruhling scored 1,105 career points which still ranks eighth among three-year players and 27th overall. He was named to the 1968 Metro Collegiate All-Star Team, the 1967 Governor’s Classic All-Tournament Team and was a 1967 All Mid-Atlantic Conference honorable mention selection. Ruhling hit 82.4 percent of his free throws, a mark which still ranks in the top 15 all-time in program history. As a junior, he averaged 20 points per game to rank among the top 50 in the country. Overall in his career, Ruhling averaged 16 points per game.
Hugo “Dutch” Schulze '41 (inducted 1969)
Hugo “Dutch” Schulze took over as coach of the American basketball program in 1952. Schulze had the most success in his first season as his team went 15-8 and advanced all the way to the Mason- Dixon Conference title game before losing 65-62 to Loyola Maryland in overtime. Schulze also served as an athletic director at American University.
Oscar H. Sells '33 (inducted 1973)
Oscar Sells led the Eagles to an overall record of 43-20 in his four years at American. The team also tallied only four losses in his final two seasons.Sells received his bachelor’s from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1933 and went on to receive his master’s from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1934.
Ed Tapscott '80 (inducted 2006)
Ed Tapscott began his coaching career as an assistant coach at American University under former Maryland head coach Gary Williams. Tapscott spent four seasons as Williams’ assistant, helping the Eagles amass 72 wins, including a school-record 24 wins in the 1980-81 season. During his time as an assistant coach, Tapscott graduated from AU’s prestigious Washington College of Law in 1980. In 1982, Tapscott was elevated to AU’s head coach. In eight seasons, Tapscott finished with 109 wins, the third-most in school history (behind AU Hall of Fame namesake Stafford Cassell and Jeff Jones). Tapscott’s best seasons were his first (1982-83) and last (1989-90), when he went 20-10 and 20-9, respectively. After Tapscott left AU, he went on to become vice president of player personnel and basketball operations and served as interim president and general manager of the New York Knicks. During Tapscott’s reign with New York, the Knicks made two trips to the NBA Finals (1994 and 1999) and advanced to at least the second round of the playoffs every year. In addition, Tapscott worked in the front office of the Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns and Charlotte Bobcats.
Wilbur Thomas '75 (inducted 2003)
Wilbur was a basketball star on a team that went 53-25 during one of the most successful eras in AU basketball history. AU participated in the NIT in 1973 for the first time ever and regularly beat teams like Georgetown, St. John’s, George Washington and Temple. Wilbur had great basketball talent, but it was his toughness that made him a stand-out player. He set freshman and sophomore records for scoring during the 1971-73 seasons. As a freshman he averaged 28.6 points per game, netting 48 in one contest. As a sophomore, he averaged 23.9 points per game, including a 26 point effort against Louisville in AU’s first appearance as a Division I squad. Thomas is fourth in career scoring average (19.8), eighth in all-time scoring (1,543) and seventh in all-time rebounding (803).
John Wakefield '50 (inducted 1973)
John Wakefield led the Eagles to the Mason-Dixon Conference Championships during his senior season, where American defeated Loyola (Md.), 55-54, to earn its first conference championship since the 1945-46 season. The team posted an overall record of 70-39 in his four years at American, and went 23-3 in the Mason-Dixon conference in his final two seasons.
Kermit A. Washington '73 (inducted 1985)
Simply one of the greatest in NCAA history, Kermit is credited with putting AU basketball on the national map with a prolific career with the Eagles. In 1972-73, he had one of the greatest seasons in NCAA history, as he became the last player to average 20 points and 20 rebounds per game. He earned 1973 Associated Press First Team All-America honors while leading the nation in rebounding for the second consecutive season. Following the season, Washington was selected as the fourth pick in the NBA draft. He currently holds every American rebounding record. Washington was also an Academic All-American in 1972 and 1973 respectively. His AU accomplishments include being 10th all-time in scoring despite playing only three years (1,467), third in scoring average (20.1) and first in rebounds (1,478). He is also ninth on the free throws made list with 313. Kermit’s uniform is displayed in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. among other stellar basketball legends.
Frank Weiss '58 (inducted 1999)
Perhaps the finest ball player to take the hardcourt at American was Frank Weiss. In his years at AU, 1955-58, he became one of the Eagles’ most potent scorers. Frank came from Brooklyn, N.Y., where he was a member of the 1954 Lafayette High Championship basketball team. Frank Weiss was known to always hustle and work hard and was very popular with his teammates. He had 1,632 career points.
Dickie Wells '65 (inducted 2012)
Dickie Wells’ impact on American University men’s basketball is still apparent when looking through the record books. He is second all-time at American with 1,184 career rebounds and sixth and eighth with 433 and 412 rebounds in a single season, respectively. He also ranks third with 16 free throws made in a single game at Towson. Wells was the first Eagle to receive All-America honors when he was named a Little College All-America Honorable Mention in 1958. He was also named an NCAA College Division Honorable Mention in 1960. Wells was the first African-American player at American and the Mason-Dixon Conference.
Gary Williams (inducted 2012)
Gary Williams posted an overall record of 72-42 in four seasons at the helm of the program from 1978 to 1982. He led American to two consecutive 20-win seasons, the first since the 1959-1960 season. The Eagles earned two National Invitational Tournament berths and went to the ECC Championships in all four seasons under Williams. During his time at American, he coached three 1,000 point scorers including American’s second all-time leading scorer, Russell “Boo” Bowers, who finished his career with 2,056 total points. He also developed American’s all-time assists leader, Gordon Austin ’84, who finished his career with 691 assists. A big part of Williams’ legacy is the list of assistants who went on to successful careers including Fran Dunphy, Ed Tapscott and Chris Knoche. Williams finished his coaching career with 668 wins and a 2002 National Championship with the Maryland Terrapins.
Jimmy Williams '56
Jimmy Williams took over as the head coach at American at the start of the 1962-63 season after spending several seasons as a assistant coach for the Eagles. Williams graduated from American after lettering in basketball and baseball. His best season as a basketball coach was his first when he led the Eagles to a record of 10-14. Williams was also the golf coach at American and guided his team to the Mason-Dixon Conference crown.
Garrison Carr '09 (inducted 2023)
Standout guard Garrison Carr, the best three-point shooter to ever come through the men’s basketball program, led the Eagles to back-to-back Patriot League titles in 2008 and 2009. The PL Tournament MVP in both seasons, Carr was also named to the All-Patriot League First Team in each of those years and was named to the NABC All-District First Team as a senior in 2008-09. Carr sank 302 three-pointers as an Eagle which still ranks first all-time, and he holds the top two spots for three-pointers made in a season with 135 in 2007-08 and 114 in 2008-09. Carr’s career three-point percentage of .409 ranks ninth in the record books, and his 119 career games played ranks in a tie for sixth. He finished his career with 1,412 points which now ranks 14th all-time, with his 606 points in 2007-08 ranking eighth all-time in a single season. In 2015, Carr was named to the Patriot League’s 25th Anniversary Team along with teammate and fellow inductee Derrick Mercer. Carr graduated from American with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the Kogod School of Business in 2009, and has been employed by Amazon Web Services for nearly nine years.
Derrick Mercer '09 (inducted 2023)
One of just two in men’s basketball program history to earn Associated Press honorable mention All-America honors, Derrick Mercer was also the 2009 Patriot League Player of the Year. He led the Eagles to back-to-back Patriot League titles in 2008 and 2009, and was an All-PL First Team selection as a senior after earning second team honors as a junior. Mercer was a standout from the beginning, and was named the Patriot League’s Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2006. He ranks 23rd all-time in program history with 1,285 career points, and second in career assists with 524. Mercer’s 44.6 percent three-point shooting accuracy ranks fifth on the season list, his 124 games played is still tied for third all-time and his 122 career starts ranks second all-time. In 2015, Mercer was named to the Patriot League’s 25th Anniversary Team along with teammate and fellow inductee Garrison Carr. Mercer graduated with a bachelor’s degree in audio production from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2009, and his professional basketball career included getting drafted by the Harlem Globetrotters. He now works for Jersey City Public Schools and serves as the head coach for the Jersey City AAU Heat.
Jeff Jones (inducted 2025)
Jeff Jones' coaching tenure at American (2000-2013) was marked by unparalleled success and transformative leadership. Under his guidance, the Eagles won their first two Patriot League Championships and earned back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009. In his 13 seasons, Jones' teams captured four Patriot League regular-season titles and played in five championship games, a testament to his ability to consistently compete at the highest level. With an overall record of 212-182, Jones became the winningest coach in program history, achieving nine winning seasons and mentoring 22 All-Patriot League selections. Among his standout players, two were named Patriot League Players of the Year—Patrick Doctor in 2002 and Derrick Mercer in 2009—while Andre Ingram and Mercer were recognized as Rookies of the Year. Jones' coaching prowess earned him Patriot League Coach of the Year honors in 2009. His emphasis on academic and personal development saw 60 of his players named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, while 23 of his athletes pursued professional careers.
