The American University volleyball team delivered its most dominant performance of the season on Saturday night, hitting .427 as a team on the way to sweeping Army. Five different Eagles logged at least five kills with a .400 hitting percentage or better, led by 10 from
Salme Hollas. With the resounding win, American is out to a 2-0 start in Patriot League play.
Notable
- Hollas hit a .409, adding eight digs, three blocks, and two aces to total 13.5 points.
- Prinzez Zeck followed with eight kills at a .538 clip, while Sterling had seven at .538, Carly Sciborski had seven at .429, and Deniz Dakak had five at .625.
- It's been a red hot stretch for the senior opposite hitter Sciborski, who's hit .300 or better with at least seven kills in five straight matches.
- Dakak dished out 33 assists to drive AU's best offensive day of the season, contributing six digs as well.
- Bella Marrero came up with 12 digs, including two crucial gets on match point. She committed 0 reception errors for the second straight game.
- The Eagles committed just three reception errors against an Army team that ranks 19th in aces per set.
How it Happened
Set 1: AU 25, Army 17
- AU controlled the first set, hitting .464 as a team and holding Army to an .088 clip. The Eagles committed just one attack error, and led by as much as 10 at 22-12.
- Salme Hollas was excellent, putting down six kills on just 10 attempts. Sam McMillan and Sciborski each had three.
Set 2: AU 25, Army 15
- The Eagles picked up right where they left off in the second set, hitting .407 with just two attack errors. The Black Knights hit just .108, and AU won the set by its largest margin of the season so far.
- Six different players recorded kills, with Dakak logging four to lead the way.
- Defensively, the Eagles made five total blocks. Zeck topped the list with three, Sterling and Hollas each had two, and McMillan had one.
- Through two sets, AU had committed just one reception error.
Set 3: AU 25, Army 23
- The third set was the tightest of the day, as the Black Knights hit .308 and put down 17 kills, but the American offense stayed on its course. The Eagles hit .412 in the frame to seal the win.
- Head coach Jenny Glenn called a timeout after Army took a 23-22 lead. Out of the break, Dakak delivered a dump kill, Hollas provided an ace, and Sterling sealed the win with her seventh kill of the day.
- Marrero was stellar on the final point of the match, digging two big swings from Marlee Lightsey to keep the point alive for her team.
