Women’s Soccer Drops Road Match at George Washington

WASHINGTON (GW Soccer Field) - American University women's soccer got on the board with a 71st-minute goal, but was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 5-1 loss at George Washington on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles' final non-conference game will be at home on Sunday against William & Mary.

How it Happened
  • American earned back-to-back corner kicks in the fourth minute after early pressure on GW's defense, but the only resulting shot by sophomore Jayden Fisher was saved by GW's Jasmine Black.
  • With a left-footed shot into the upper right corner in the 14th minute, Caroline Donmoyer put the Revolutionaries on the board.
  • Kalia Kau scored for GW on a free kick in the 24th minute, hitting it right over the wall of defenders and into the top right corner for a 2-0 lead.
  • Making her first-ever NCAA appearance, sophomore Addison Zerkle made a trio of saves the rest of the half for the Eagles to keep the deficit at two goals.
  • Senior Bella Vozar had a chance on a header off a corner kick in the final seconds of the opening period, but Black made the save.
  • In the 50th minute, Zerkle made a diving save but Ella Provost-Heron was able to collect the ball from AU's defense and take advantage of Zerkle being out of position for a 3-0 lead.
  • Freshman Julia Zeug had a strong shot for AU in the 60th minute but couldn't convert.
  • Zerkle got a hand on the fourth goal by the Revs in the 63rd minute, but the lofting shot by Isabelle Ohlmann was just out of her grasp.
  • Ohlmann added another one two minutes later with a long shot from the left that found the upper right corner of the net.
  • The bright spot of the game for the Eagles was the first collegiate goal for sophomore Jenna Etienne-Valtrin, whose turnaround right-footed crossing shot found the upper left corner. The chance was set up by sophomore Logan Rivers, who sent the ball into the top right of the box.
