EASTON, Pa. - Senior attacker
Kellie Linehan had a career day for the American University lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon, scoring six goals and dishing out three assists to lead the Eagles to a 12-10 win over Lafayette. Fittingly, the team captain also reached 100 career goals in the midst of her best offensive game in an American uniform. The Eagles are now 3-5 in Patriot League play with one game left in the regular season.
- Linehan shot accurately all game, putting seven of her nine shots on target. Her nine points are tied for fourth all-time in American's single-game history. She now has 34 goals on the year and 48 points.
- Away from goal, Linehan also contributed three draw controls and a ground ball.
- Reagan Murdoch and Anastasia Byrnes each added two goals, while Julia Pope and Annabelle Jackson both found the back of the net. Murdoch's team-leading total is now 40.
- Byrnes and Murdoch both dealt out assists, with Byrnes adding three caused turnovers and Murdoch picking up four ground balls as well.
- Lauren Appleby had another strong day in the draw control circle, winning six to herself. The sophomore is up to 39 on the year, making an impact in her role after missing all of last season due to injury.
- Brooke Hill made eight saves in goal for the Eagles.
How it Happened
- Linehan's first tally came just over eight minutes into the first quarter, when Pope found her open in front of goal for a simple finish on cage. She quickly returned the favor, dealing the ball to Pope on a transition break before the freshman fired a shot past Kennedy Karr to tie the game 2-2.
- AU's point-leader caught fire in the second quarter, as she was involved in all but one of her team's six goals in the frame.
- She first blew past her defender and beat Karr to the bottom of the cage, then she found a cutting Jackson for her second assist. It was an excellent finish by Jackson, fading away in the eight meter and going low to high to beat Karr and give AU a 4-3 lead.
- Byrnes added to the scoring after Lafayette tied the game 4-4, finding space right in front of the crease and unleashing a shot that hit Karr and fell over the goal line. Linehan picked up the assist, drawing two defenders and feeding her teammate from the point position.
- Adria Kotzian connected with Murdoch to give American a 6-4 lead, then the two teams traded goals through the rest of the frame. Georgia Swarr scored for Lafayette, followed by another for Linehan, and then a tally from Andie Pedatella a minute later.
- With a 1:19 on the clock, Linehan converted a free position to give her team an 8-6 lead going into the half.
- The Eagles never let Lafayette chip any closer than a two-goal deficit in the second half, only allowing back-to-back goals once. Byrnes opened up the scoring after a nine-minute drought from both teams, converting a free position on a man-up chance.
- Sadie Martiesian responded for the Leopards, but Linehan punched back with her fifth goal with just 36 seconds remaining in the quarter. She finished right in front of the crease at the near post, find herself wide open after Murdoch drew a double team and put the ball right on her stick.
- It was Murdoch on the scoring end to start the fourth quarter, giving the Eagles their largest lead of the game at 11-7. She did well to pick up a ground ball in traffic inside the eight meter, slipping past two defenders and beating Karr to the right side of the cage.
- Lafayette strung two goals together in response through Kristin Igneri and Swarr, but that was the closest they got to the AU lead. Linehan scored her sixth goal of the day at the 10:18 mark, turning and firing from close range after Byrnes found her cutting in the eight meter. Swarr added her fifth goal of the day with just under five minutes remaining, but the American defense held strong from there to take the win.
