BOSTON –– For the second time in a week in Case Gym, the contest between American University women's basketball and Boston University came down to the final minutes for a decision to be made. In the end, a 26-point career-high performance from
Charlotte Tuhy wouldn't be enough to carry AU to the Patriot League Quarterfinals and the season ended with the Terriers claiming a 69-58 victory over the Eagles.
Inside the Box Score
- Tuhy led all-players in both scoring and rebounding. The freshman had a double-double with 26 points and 15 boards in the final game of the season, ending with her 15th double-double.
- Tuhy's previous career-high of 23 points was scored one week prior, also against the Terriers in Case Gym. She shot 10-of-20, 50 percent, from the floor.
- Madisyn Moore-Nicholson added 16 points to the Eagles' cause.
- Anete Adler topped for Boston with 21 points. Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir and Kate Allard added another 13 and 12 points respectively.
- American outrebounded the home team 36-34 but shot just 36.2 to BU's 49.2 percent.
- The Terriers led 44-20 in points in the paint and capitalized 18-9 from bench scoring.
How it Happened
- The American defense kept the Terriers off the board through their first two possessions, but the Terriers reciprocated on the opposite end and neither team got on the board early.
- The Eagles had a narrow lead at the midway point of the first period, up 10-8 and capitalizing on shots early, shooting 44.4 percent.
- After the opening 10, Boston took the lead, up 16-12. Tuhy had seven points and five boards early. The Terriers improved to shoot 50 percent, five different players on the board.
- After going down five, a trey from Kayla Greyvensteyn brought the Eagles back within one possession, but BU surged, taking their largest lead yet, up nine, 26-17, with six minutes to play in the first half; seven different Terriers had scored.
- It increased to a 12-point differential with four minutes to go when Adler hit a three-pointer. BU shooting 60 percent in the second, 6-of-10 from the floor to AU's 3-of-9.
- At the locker room break, the Eagles managed to make a dent in the Terriers' lead, down eight, 35-28. The Terriers shot 50 percent in the first half; the Eagles improved to 41 percent in the second but were shooting 37.5 percent combined. Both teams went 3-of-4 to close out the half.
- BU was leading 22-14 in points in the paint and had scored five from American's three turnovers; the home squad led 18-17 in rebounds.
- The Terriers came out of the break and pushed the lead back to nine, but American responded with a 5-0 run to get back into it. Tuhy was on 14 and Moore-Nicholson was on 13 points after opening the second half with five points each.
- Still down, American was hanging around, reducing the BU lead to six, before a pair of free throws made it eight again, Boston leading 46-38 with five minutes to play in the third. Each team was shooting 50 percent in the quarter.
- BU retook a 12-point lead with three to play in the third, leading 50-38, holding the American offense off from being productive while going on a 6-0 run. Allard and Adler were each on 10 points.
- With a three pointer to end the period for American, the Eagles were back within double digits, trailing 52-45 with 10 to play for.
- Midway through and the Eagles still couldn't close the gap, but neither team was performing well in the third. American trailed 60-54 with five to play. A three pointer for Tuhy from the corner pocket made it a two-possession game and forced a Terrier timeout.
- The Eagles, after cutting it down to two with 3:47 to play, found themselves down seven with back-to-back buckets from BU, trailing 65-58, with 1:13 to play.
- The Terriers pushed ahead, claiming an 11-point 69-58 victory by finishing on a 9-0 run over the final 3:47 to seal the win at home over the Eagles.
