Student-Athletes Build Confidence and Connection at Annual Orin R. Smith Life Skills Etiquette Dinner

WASHINGTON - American University Athletics hosted its annual Orin R. Smith Life Skills Etiquette Dinner on March 22 as the capstone event of the Stephanie M. Bennett Life Skills and Leadership Academy student-athlete development programming, bringing together junior and senior student-athletes, campus leaders, and community partners for an evening centered on confidence, connection, and preparation for life beyond sport.

Designed as both a learning experience and a live application environment, the event blended professional etiquette instruction with real-time networking opportunities. Student-athletes participated in a formal dining experience led by Crystal L. Bailey, Director of The Etiquette Institute of Washington, gaining practical insight into professional presence, communication, and navigating formal settings.

Throughout the evening, student-athletes engaged in meaningful conversations with coaches, faculty, staff, and industry professionals—practicing introductions, building relationships, and developing the confidence needed to succeed in professional environments. The event created a unique space for student-athletes to connect not only with professionals, but also with peers across teams, strengthening community and shared learning within AU Athletics.

More than a lesson in dining etiquette, the program emphasized the importance of showing up with intention—encouraging student-athletes to invest in who they are becoming beyond their sport. By combining skill-building with real-time application, the Etiquette Dinner continues to serve as a critical bridge between the student-athlete experience and post-graduate success.

The event is made possible through the generosity and vision of Stephanie M. Bennett-Smith, whose endowment supports transformative student-athlete development initiatives at American University. Her commitment reflects a deep belief in preparing student-athletes not only for success in competition, but for leadership, confidence, and opportunity in every space they enter.

Experiences like this are critical in helping our student-athletes build confidence and prepare for life beyond the game. We are incredibly grateful to Stephanie Bennett-Smith for her continued investment in creating opportunities that allow our student-athletes to grow, connect, and lead in every space they step into.”
Patty Medina, Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development & Inclusive Excellence

Through her support, programs like the Etiquette Dinner provide student-athletes with access to high-impact, experiential learning opportunities that expand their perspectives, strengthen their professional readiness, and reinforce the value of investing in development beyond sport.

American University Athletics extends its sincere appreciation to the faculty, staff, and coaches who supported the event, as well as our valued community partners from LeidosLaw of Athlete, and Monumental, whose presence and engagement helped create a meaningful and impactful experience for our student-athletes.

The Etiquette Dinner remains a signature component of AU Athletics’ holistic development model—ensuring that student-athletes leave not only as competitors, but as confident, prepared, and connected leaders.
