Rally Falls Short for Men's Basketball; Rematch With BU Awaits in Quarterfinal

WASHINGTON - After trailing by as many as 22 in the first half, American University men's basketball erased the entire deficit and briefly took the lead late, but Boston University escaped Bender Arena with a 68-65 win on AU's Senior Day. The Eagles and the Terriers are set for a rematch Thursday night in the Patriot League quarterfinals in Boston, with AU as the No. 5 seed and BU as the No. 4 seed.

Notable
  • Sophomore Julen Iturbe scored 12 of his team-high 17 points in the second half, also tallying three assists and two steals.
  • Junior Greg Jones and freshman Kade Sebastian scored 13 points apiece, with Sebastian hitting a trio of three-pointers and Jones going 7-for-7 at the line.
  • The Eagles forced 15 turnovers while committing just seven, finishing with a 21-6 lead in points off turnovers.
  • BU's Chance Gladden scored 22 points and Michael McNair posted a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds.
First Half
  • Behind 56 percent shooting, BU led by as many as 22 points and jumped ahead of the Eagles from the tip.
  • With a 12-0 run and a few scoreless minutes for American, the Terriers led 20-5 near the 13-minute mark.
  • The run was 17-1 for BU's first 20-point lead at 26-6.
  • After going eight minutes without a field goal, Sebastian drained a triple for AU at 7:24.
  • Iturbe hit another at 6:48, but both three-pointers were answered by McNair at the other end who made four of his first five attempts from long range.
  • With six seconds left before the break, Sebastian hit his second trey to cut the halftime deficit to 15 points, 38-23.
Second Half
  • American set the tone early for its second-half comeback, as a layup for Matt Mayock was followed by a triple for Geoff Sprouse to make it a 10-point game.
  • From 1:34 left in the first half to the 9:46 mark of the second half, a 12-minute span, the Eagles outscored BU 26-6.
  • The run was capped by a Mayock dunk off a Sebastian steal and Iturbe assist, making it a two-point game, 46-44.
  • After matching that two-point deficit once more on an Iturbe triple at the nine-minute mark, the Eagles fell back into an eight-point hole after a 6-0 BU run.
  • American showed no quit, rallying again with Iturbe scoring all six points in a 6-1 run to bring AU within three, 58-55 with five and a half minutes to go.
  • Down again by six at 3:48, AU made a final push as Sebastian scored seven unanswered points for a 65-64 lead at the two-minute mark.
  • The Eagles were unable to score again, committing one turnover and missing two shots the rest of the way.
  • One BU layup and a 2-of-4 showing at the line was enough to give the Terriers the win.
Next Up
