Career-High 28 for Geoff Sprouse at Lafayette Powers Men's Basketball to Third Straight Win

EASTON, Pa. - Senior Geoff Sprouse turned in a career performance, pouring in 28 points and drilling a career-high eight three-pointers to lead American University men's basketball to a 75-61 road win at Lafayette. The Eagles led for nearly 33 minutes and shot 50 percent from beyond the arc in their third straight victory.
 
Notable 
  • Sprouse hit 8-of-11 three-point attempts and went 10-for-13 from the field overall, also adding four assists, four rebounds, and three steals to his 28 points.
  • The eight triples for Sprouse ties BU's Azmar Abdullah for the most in a single game by a Patriot League player this season.
  • Junior Greg Jones and freshman Madden Collins scored 12 points each, with Jones going 4-for-6 and leading all players with seven boards.
  • Sophomore Julen Iturbe dished a team-high five assists, posted six rebounds, and went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc for nine points.
  • The Eagles hit 13-of-26 three-pointers, shooting slightly better from long range than they did overall (49 percent).
  • Lafayette's Mark Butler led three Leopards in double digits with 17 points.
  • Leading scorer for Lafayette this season, Caleb Williams, left the game due to illness in the opening minute and did not return.
First Half 
  • Huge swings marked the early part of the first half, first with the Eagles jumping out to a 14-point lead.
  • Hitting five of their first six attempts from long range, including two for Sprouse, the Eagles led 16-2 four minutes into the game.
  • Lafayette answered with a 9-0 run, and turned it into a 23-5 run for a 25-21 lead at the six-minute mark.
  • The Leopards matched their five-point lead once more at 28-23, but a driving layup for Jones tied it up at 29-29 with two minutes to go.
  • Down 31-29 at 1:51, AU closed the half on a 5-0 run with a triple from Iturbe and a layup from Jones for a 34-31 lead at the break.
  • Jones led the Eagles with 10 first-half points and hit all four of his field goal attempts in the period.
Second Half 
  • Sprouse hit his fifth triple for AU's first double-digit lead in the second half, 43-32 at 16:20.
  • The Eagles never trailed in the second, but the Leopards made it a three-point game just past the midway point.
  • After a two-minute scoring drought for both teams, Iturbe got a three-pointer to fall for a six-point, 56-50 lead at 7:55.
  • Iturbe's bucket sparked an 8-2 run that put AU up by nine with six minutes left, and a three-point play for junior Matt Mayock put AU back up by double digits with 4:14 remaining.
  • Lafayette fouled Jones after a triple by Butler narrowed a 13-point margin to 10, 71-61 at 1:21, but Jones made both free throws.
  • Sprouse came up with a steal and a layup on the Leopards' next possession for the final score of 75-61.


Next Up
  • The Eagles will return home to close out their regular season slate with back-to-back games in Bender Arena, starting with a 7 p.m. contest against Lehigh on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
