WASHINGTON – In a stellar offensive day for the American University volleyball team, the Eagles hit .336 as a team on the way to a commanding sweep of Navy.
Elise Sterling hit a .600 with 12 kills to lead the way, while
Carly Sciborski struck a .667 clip with 10 kills. AU has now won seven in a row, and holds a 6-0 Patriot League record.
Notable
- Sterling's team-leading hitting percentage jumped to .350 (minimum 100 attack attempts) after today's performance, with Sciborski trailing behind her at .333.
- Salme Hollas had 11 kills with seven digs, while Sophie Dufoir struck nine kills and came up with a block.
- Prinzez Zeck totaled four blocks on the day, adding defensive contributions to her five kills. She leads the team in denials with 65.
- It was a near double-double for Deniz Dakak, who dished 42 assists and added nine digs.
- Bella Marrero continues to clean up on the defensive end for American, leading the team with 17 digs.
Set 1: American 28, Navy 26
- The first set was tight, with neither team leading by more than three.
- Trailing 16-13, AU notched a crucial three points in a row to tie the score and keep Navy from pulling away. It began with two errors from Navy, then a kill from Sciborski.
- Hollas put down back-to-back kills to put the Eagles ahead 20-18, but the Mids answered with a 4-2 run to tie the score at 22-22.
- Trading points until it was finally tied 26-26, Navy committed a service error and Sciborski delivered another kill to seal the set. She was in a groove throughout the frame, hitting .833 with five kills.
Set 2: American 25, Navy 16
- The Eagles hit their stride in the second set, outhitting Navy .355 to .073. They had three blocks, four service aces, and just two attack errors.
- AU got out to a 7-2 lead and had a 15-8 advantage at the media timeout before cruising to the win.
- Hollas, Sterling, and Dufour each had three kills, while Dakak, Sterling, Sciborski, and Zeck each had block assists, with one solo block for Zeck.
Set 3: American 25, Navy 15
- The Eagles led 10-9 in the final set, then separated themselves with a 5-1 run led by two kills from Sciborski.
- Sterling and Hollas combined for five kills the rest of the way, with Olivia Miller delivering two service aces.
- The set and match ended with a block from Zeck and Sciborski.
- It was AU's most efficient set of the day, hitting .406 as a team.
