WEST POINT, N.Y. - On the back end of a two-match week, the American University wrestling team dropped a tight dual to Army on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles won five bouts, including a 20-point technical fall from
Raymond Lopez, but bonus points favored the Black Knights for a 22-17 result.
Notable
- The Eagles got off to a strong start, winning the first three matches of the day. Starting at 133, Raymond Lopez dominated his way to a technical fall of Devin Ryan.
- The senior came out of the gate with three takedowns, never looking back from there and putting up 20 points.
- Jack Maida followed Lopez with a thrilling overtime win over Conor Collins. Tied 6-6 at the end of regulation, Maida landed a takedown just nine seconds into the first overtime period.
- At 149, Gage Owen got the job done by controlling a low-scoring battle against Ryan Franco. He forced a stall warning in the second period and held onto to his lead, tacking on riding time for the 2-0 victory.
- After bonus point wins at 157, 165, and 174, Army took a 14-11 lead. At 184, Caleb Campos tied the score with a 5-2 decision of David Barrett.
- The Black Knights came out on top of the 197 and 285 bouts to clinch the victory, but JJ Peace closed the dual out with a win for AU.
- Ahead 4-2 in the third period with riding time favoring Charlie Farmer, Peace delivered a clutch takedown to take the match 7-4.
- AU is now 5-7 overall and 1-2 in EIWA duals.
