Women’s Soccer Battles Defensively, Falls 2-0 to 10th-Ranked South Carolina

WASHINGTON – Facing one of the top teams in the nation, American University women's soccer held strong in a 2-0 loss against No. 10 South Carolina on Thursday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Tamera Taylor-Moore, making just her second career appearance, posted a career-high seven saves for the Eagles against the nationally ranked Gamecocks.

Inside the Box Score
  • Taylor-Moore had a big second half, making five saves, and she allowed just a single goal in each period.
  • The Eagles' only shot on target came from sophomore Maddie Hurowitz just a few minutes before the end of the first half.
  • South Carolina took nine shots on goal to the Eagles' one, and had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Six Eagles played all 90 minutes—Taylor-Moore, Natalia Croce, Bella Vozar, Avery Klingensmith, Eliza Fisher, and Phoebe Merrigan—while the Gamecocks had most of their roster see game action.
 How It Happened
  • Taylor-Moore was tested early on, making a save in the sixth minute off a header by South Carolina's Katie Shea Collins.
  • It was also a header that was responsible for the Gamecocks' first-half goal, as Mackenzie Johnson converted off an assist from Micah Bryant.
  • Following Hurowitz's blast from the right side that was saved by South Carolina's Christina Tsaousis with three and a half minutes remaining in the half, the Eagles earned a corner but weren't able to find another opportunity.
  • The Gamecocks controlled possession for much of the second half, leading to a huge advantage in both shots and corners.
  • Taylor-Moore came up with five big saves, again allowing just a single goal in the 56th minute which was once again scored by Johnson.
  • Bryant took a long strike that was saved by Taylor-Moore but got loose, leading to the close-range goal for Bryant.
  • The Eagles' defense held tough through the remaining 34 minutes, but the offense was not able to earn any solid chances.

Up Next
