BETHLEHEM, Pa. - At the end of a challenging week for American University men's soccer that saw the team take on two ranked opponents, senior midfielder
Troy Elgersma was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.
With AU trailing #1 Vermont on Friday, Elgersma provided the game-tying goal in the 72nd minute.
Sebastian Garces lofted a cross into the box that was misplayed by Ludvig af Ugglas, leaving the ball unpossessed. Quick to react, Elgersma pounced on the ball and fired it to the top right corner to level the match 1-1.
The team captain has been American's most consistent attacking player so far, leading the team with two goals and seven shots, putting three on target. At Virginia on Monday night, Elgersma created AU's best chance at an equalizer with his squad trailing 1-0 and down a man. After a long goal kick from
Matthew Tibbetts, Elgersma fired a shot from well outside the box that forced a one-handed diving save from Casper Mols.
This is Elgersma's third career Patriot League Player of the Week award.
The Eagles are back in action this Saturday, Sep. 6 at Delaware. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
