Lafayette Rallies Late to Edge Women’s Soccer, 2-1

EASTON, Pa. - A well-timed goal by Avery Klingensmith just before halftime gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead on the road Saturday night, but Lafayette capitalized late with a pair of second-half scores to hand American University women's soccer a 2-1 defeat in Patriot League play.

Notable
  • Despite managing just one shot in the match, American held the lead for 37 minutes before the Leopards finally broke through with the equalizer in the 81st minute and the game-winner in the 88th.
  • Lafayette took eight shots on goal to AU's one, and the Leopards had 14 total shots.
  • The goal by Klingensmith was her second of the season, and it was assisted by senior Phoebe Merrigan who posted her fourth helper of the year.
  • Corner kicks favored Lafayette 12-4, one of which led to the game-winner.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Addison Roemer made six saves for the Eagles.
How it Happened
  • Lafayette put some pressure on early, and Roemer made her first save in the seventh minute.
  • Merrigan took a free kick within scoring range in the 26th minute, but nothing came of it for AU.
  • Two more saves followed for Roemer in the 30th and 31st minutes.
  • A great serve by Klingensmith with three minutes left in the half put the ball in dangerous territory, but the Leopards cleared it away.
  • With two minutes left in the half, junior Lauren Sanders collected a loose ball off a Lafayette defender and passed it to Merrigan, who quickly got it over to Klingensmith in the center but well back from the top of the box.
  • Klingensmith got around to the side of her defender and left-footed a strong shot that sailed in the top left corner of the box with no chance to be saved by Lafayette's Catherine Apker.
  • Roemer preserved the tie with a huge save in the 64th minute, punching a shot by Camryn Fitch up and out of the top of the goal.
  • Graduate student Jennifer McGuire took a foul in the 76th minute that led to a Lafayette yellow card and a free kick for Sanders. Her shot rebounded off the wall of Lafayette defenders, and a second shot by Klingensmith sailed high.
  • The Eagles avoided one equalizer chance when Lafayette's April McDonald had a shot bounce off the bottom of the crossbar in the 76th minute.
  • In the 81st minute, a save by Roemer went off the crossbar and to the feet of Nadia Zaffanella who put it in to tie the game for Lafayette.
  • After a final save for Roemer in the 87th minute, a corner kick for Lafayette led to the game-winner as Sofia Ruggiero headed in the ball off the cross from Fitch.
