Women's Soccer Falls 2-0 to Visiting Loyola Maryland

WASHINGTON - Despite an evenly matched game in total shots and shots on target, the American University women's soccer team fell 2-0 to visiting Loyola Maryland as the Greyhounds scored once in each half.

Notable
  • Shots on goal were even with eight by each team, as were total shots at 17-17.
  • Loyola goalkeeper Hannah Goetzer made eight saves, while sophomore Addison Roemer made six for the Eagles.
  • Corner kicks slightly favored AU at 6-5, and possession in the game was fairly equal as well.
  • Senior Avery Klingensmith took three of the Eagles' eight shots on goal, and was one of five AU players to be on the field for all 90 minutes.
How it Happened
  • Both keepers faced early tests, and six total saves were made in the first 26 minutes of action.
  • The toughest save in that stretch was by Roemer in the 26th minute, keeping the Greyhounds off the board with a dive to her right.
  • Three minutes before halftime, Loyola earned a corner kick that led to its first goal.
  • After a shot by Francesca Khachatourians was blocked, Riley Kennel collected the rebound in a scramble and left-footed the ball into the lower left of the goal.
  • Five minutes into the second half after a yellow card on Loyola's Reagan Mallia, the Eagles earned a free kick that led to a close-range chance for Klingensmith but Goetzer was right there for it.
  • Grad student Jennifer McGuire took a long strike in the 67th minute that was saved by Loyola, and three minutes later the Greyhounds got another on the board.
  • A ball cleared by Roemer didn't leave the Eagles defensive third, and it came right back toward her in the form of a long strike from Asma Merzougui whose left-footed shot sailed into the very top of the goal, just under the crossbar.
  • Senior Morissa Lambert had one more shot on target for AU in the remaining time, but the Eagles were unable to generate other opportunities.
Up Next
  • The Eagles are back at home for a 1 p.m. Patriot League game against Lehigh on Saturday, Oct. 4. The game will be followed by a free post-game clinic for kids in 8th grade and younger, as well as an autograph session with the team.
