Women's Soccer Jumps Ahead Early, Downs Lehigh 3-1

WASHINGTON - Powered by Jennifer McGuire's third-minute opener, American University women's soccer beat Lehigh 3–1 at home after building a 2–0 halftime lead and finishing with a 9–5 edge in shots on goal. Three different players scored for the Eagles, who improve to 2-2 in Patriot League action.

Notable
  • McGuire and senior Avery Klingensmith each scored their team-leading third goals of the season, with Klingensmith also assisting on McGuire's goal along with junior Lauren Sanders.
  • Freshman Jayden Fisher scored her first career goal off the second assist in the game for Sanders.
  • Lehigh finished with a 16-15 edge in total shots after a flurry of activity late, but most were not on target.
  • Sophomore Addison Roemer made three saves, allowing only a penalty-kick goal in the 55th minute.
  • The Eagles led 3-0 for six minutes in the second half, marking their first 3-0 lead in over seven years. It was also AU's first three-goal outing since a 3-1 win over UMBC on Sept. 5, 2024.
How it Happened
  • The Eagles got on the board quickly thanks to a goal set up by Sanders who intercepted a Lehigh pass in the Eagles' defensive end.
  • Sanders hit Klingensmith in the midfield, Klingensmith one-timed it to McGuire at the top of the box, and McGuire sent a perfectly placed crossing strike into the lower left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead in the third minute of action.
  • While racing after a free kick into the box by McGuire in the 36th minute, freshman Jenna Etienne-Valtrin was tripped by Lehigh's Dakota Russell, leading to a penalty kick opportunity for the Eagles.
  • Klingensmith took the shot, scoring in the upper left corner for a 2-0 lead that stood through halftime.
  • Less than four minutes into the second half, AU struck again when Sanders collected her own blocked shot and passed back to Jayden Fisher to evade a defender. Fisher left-footed the ball past the diving Lehigh goalkeeper into the upper left corner for a 3-0 lead.
  • In the 55th minute, senior Bella Vozar was whistled for a foul in the box, and the game's second penalty kick followed. Faith Dobosiewicz took it for Lehigh and converted for the Mountain Hawks' only goal.
  • Lehigh took six more shots in the remaining time, but not a single one on target.
  • The Eagles had solid chances on goal from Etienne-Valtrin, Sanders, sophomore Nariah Goldman, and sophomore Maddie Hurowitz, but all were saved by R'Reeyah Mabry-Francis of the Mountain Hawks.

Up Next
