Men’s Soccer Blanks Colgate, 1-0, in Patriot League Opener

WASHINGTON - With a clean state to start Patriot League play, the American University men's soccer team made the most of it by earning a 1-0 shutout victory against visiting Colgate in front of an energetic crowd at Reeves Field on Saturday afternoon. Just 22 seconds into the second half, senior Sebastian Garces scored the game-winner for AU's first victory of the season.

Notable
  • The goal for Garces was his first of the season and second of his career, and was scored on the Eagles' second shot on goal of the contest.
  • The first six shots of the game in the opening 23 minutes were all taken by Colgate, but American was more dominant the rest of the way.
  • Graduate student Mustapha Sowe assisted on the goal by Garces for his first of the season.
  • Total shots favored the Raiders, 11-7, and Colgate earned five corner kicks to AU's three.
  • The Eagles are now 1-4-1 on the season, and 1-0-0 in the Patriot League.
  • Colgate moves to 3-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference.
How it Happened
  • Senior Matthew Tibbetts made his only needed save of the game in the 20th minute, and a shot missed just high for Colgate a minute later.
  • The first six shots of the game were all taken by Colgate in the first 23 minutes.
  • AU's first chance came in the 32nd minute on a shot by Garces that was blocked.
  • Freshman Finn O'Brien kept a ball in play near the endline and played it over to junior Reyes Parra for a close-range shot on the low left with five and a half minutes remaining in the half, but it was saved by Colgate keeper Eric Widrick. The first AU corner followed, but no shot resulted on the play.
  • With two minutes left, sophomore Moad Ezzahir drove towards the box off a pass from senior Johah Fogel and sent a strong crossing shot from the right side that went just over the top of the goal.
  • Fifteen seconds into the second half, the Eagles gained control on the far side after a Colgate throw-in.
  • Sowe laid the ball off for Garces who sent a long strike from outside the top left of the box that sailed into the center of the goal for a 1-0 lead just 22 seconds into the half, in the 46th minute.
  • Garces had another shot on goal to the low right that was saved in the 59th minute.
  • Colgate earned back-to-back corners in the 62nd minute, but nothing came of them.
  • The Raiders earned a free kick right at the top of the box in the 72nd minute, but the shot by Aidan Wright sailed high.
  • Sophomore Chris Sullivan nearly added to AU's lead with 13 minutes left on a roller from the right that just missed wide past the far post.
  • The Raiders put a header on the post with less than four minutes left in a scramble in front of the goal, and then had a corner in the final minute that did not result in a shot.
