WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – A late goal from sophomore
Nariah Goldman put American University women's soccer on the board in the final minute of play, but the Eagles came up short in a 3-1 decision at William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles have three non-conference games remaining, the next two of which will be played at home on Reeves Field.
Inside the Box Score
- Senior Tamera Taylor-Moore played all 90 minutes in goal in her first-ever collegiate game, making four saves.
- The goal by Goldman was her second of the season and third of her career.
- William & Mary registered 17 shots to AU's eight, and put seven on goal to the Eagles' four.
- The Tribe also finished with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
How It Happened
- The Tribe scored the only goal in the first half and did so early, as a long shot by Sheridan Brummett from just outside the top of the box found its way into the upper right corner in the fifth minute.
- William & Mary continued to control possession for the majority of the first 45 minutes, finishing with a 9-1 advantage in total shots and a 4-1 lead in shots on goal.
- Senior Phoebe Merrigan notched the Eagles' only shot with seven and a half minutes to go in the half, but Ava Lentz made the save for the Tribe.
- Taylor-Moore was busy down the stretch, making her second save of the game on a close-range free kick with six and a half minutes to go, and her third with a punch-out save just two minutes later.
- In the 51st minute, Ivey Crain put William & Mary up 2-0 on a penalty-kick goal after a handball call on the Eagles.
- AU earned its first corner four minutes later after a shot by freshman Logan Rivers was blocked. Senior Eliza Fisher got her head on the ball on the corner, but it went wide.
- The third goal for the Tribe was very similar to the first, as it came off a long strike near the top of the box by Lindsay Wilson.
- Rivers had another chance on a corner in the 77th minute, but William & Mary's Gwen Doughty made the save.
- Goldman's first shot on goal came with eight minutes left on a header that was saved, but she put AU on the board in the final minute of the game. After dribbling down the left side, Goldman sent a long crossing shot from the top left of the box that sailed into the top right corner of the goal.
