WASHINGTON – After coming halfway back from a two-goal deficit with 15 minutes remaining, the chances to tie the game were thwarted for American University women's soccer in a 2-1 loss to visiting Howard. Graduate student
Jennifer McGuire scored for the Eagles, posting her second goal in as many games.
Inside the Box Score
- American (0-3-1) had the edge in shots all game long, but only four of 13 were on target. The Eagles finished with a 13-7 edge in total shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
- Howard (2-2-0) earned five corners to AU's three, and the Bison scored their second goal on a corner in the 70th minute.
- The goal for McGuire was also on a corner. It was her second of the season and fourth of her career.
- Assisting on the AU goal were seniors Avery Klingensmith and Morissa Lambert.
- Both Klingensmith and sophomore Maddie Hurowitz took two shots on goal for AU.
How It Happened
- Howard scored on its first shot of the game in the 13th minute when Asia Mickens-Perez took advantage of a defensive miscue and sent the ball into the lower left corner past AU's Addison Roemer.
- The Eagles responded after conceding, spending more time in Howard's half and firing off five shots of their own.
- Providing a spark off the bench, Hurowitz created the best opportunity of the half in the 36th minute. She beat her defender up the left flank and delivered a quality ball to the front of goal that spilled off Howard goalkeeper Trinity Knox. Lambert was there for the rebound, but was narrowly marked offside.
- AU's defense tightened up as well, not allowing another shot for the rest of the half after giving up the goal.
- Both keepers made a save in the first 16 minutes of the second half, before a corner opportunity in the 70th minute led to Howard's second goal. Samantha James sent the ball in from the left, and Rachel Suttle headed it into the net.
- After a long shot by Klingensmith was punched up and out by Knox in the 75th minute, the resulting corner led to AU's goal.
- Klingensmith put her head on the corner pass from Lambert, and McGuire right-footed it into the lower left corner of the net.
- On a free kick by senior Eliza Fisher less than two minutes later, Klingensmith had another opportunity, but her bouncing shot was saved by Knox.
- Both teams kept up the high intensity in the final stretch, earning two more shots each. Roemer made a save with seven and a half minutes to go, but a final-minute shot by Lambert at the other end went high.
