McGuire Scores Early as Women's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw with VCU

WASHINGTON – An early goal from graduate student Jennifer McGuire gave American University women's soccer the advantage, but despite seven saves in net the Eagles couldn't hold off VCU's late push, settling for a 1-1 draw at Reeves Field on Thursday afternoon.

Inside the Box Score
  • The teams tied 14-14 in overall shots, with the Rams getting an 8-5 edge in shots on target.
  • Sophomore Addison Roemer made seven saves for American, tying for the second-most in her career in a single game.
  • Corner kicks also favored VCU, 8-3.
  • The Eagles now stand at 0-2-1 for the season, while the Rams are 0-1-2.
  • The goal for McGuire was the third of her career, and first of the season.
 How It Happened
  • Roemer stopped her first shot just one minute into the contest, and made another just over 13 minutes in.
  • Senior defender Eliza Fisher, foreshadowing an assist a few minutes later, sent a strong left-footed kick to the goal in the 15th minute that went just right of the net.
  • After junior Lauren Sanders brought the ball down the center in the 18th minute, the Eagles passed around and the ball found its way back to Fisher off a pass from senior Phoebe Merrigan.
  • Fisher sent another long ball toward the box where McGuire collected it and sent it left-footed into the bottom right corner of the net past a diving Mia Pongratz.
  • The Eagles got more shots on goal from junior Bella Vozar, sophomore Maddie Hurowitz, and senior Avery Klingensmith down the stretch of the first half, but all were saved by Pongratz.
  • It was a physical second half as both teams battled hard for position, and five of the Eagles' eight corners came in the second frame.
  • Nine minutes into the period, VCU's Kendyl Sarver had the Rams' best chance to that point, with Roemer flying up to punch the ball over the crossbar for the save.
  • After a 20-minute stretch that saw a number of shots miss the target for both teams, VCU's Stella Castro sent a long ball from the far right that went over the outstretched hands of Roemer and into the top left corner.
  • Roemer made one more routine save in the final minute as the teams finished in a 1-1 draw.

Up Next
  • The Eagles will be back on Reeves for their next game, a 1 p.m. match against DC rival Howard on Thursday, Aug. 28.
